I am a soon-to-be new grad (June). I shadowed and interveiwed at a hospital a few weeks ago.
The nurse manager called me on Thursday and offered me a full time position and said HR would call with the formal offer Monday or Tuesday.
Well, it is now Wednesday evening with no call. This is a large busy hospital. I REALLY dont want to fall through the cracks as jobs for new grads are very scorifice in this area.
How long do I wait? Friday? Next week? Do I call the nurse manager or HR?
I know it is a while until I start, I just dont want to lose this one-- it is the ER which I want VERY much! But I dont want to be pushy.

I would call on Monday and talk to the nurse manager first. HR might just brush you off. If you talk to the nurse manager, she might be able to light a fire under them. Good luck.

I think you should call HR asap and tell them the nurse manager offered you a job and you have been expecting to hear from them. I'm sure they have just been busy but if you call they may get the answers you are looking for. If they tell you they are unaware of an offer, then you should call the nurse manager. Good luck!

Call and follow up! Did you write a thank-you letter for the offer? Put it in writing.

i agree with others, you need to call. AND, if you really want the job, you calling will ONLY show that you are interested and look very good for you that you follow up!

yes, I wrote a thank you note, both after shadowing and the offer.

I would call the person that offered the job and let her know you haven't heard from HR. She can let you know if HR's swamped and haven't gotten to your paperwork yet, or (gawd forbid) if the offer fell through. I was recruited by the unit where I did my preceptorship, but not only did my position get eliminated, but the entire nurse internship program for med/surg/acute care/womens health all got cancelled because of the economy. I think your case is a simple matter of a departmental communication snafu. Keeping my fingers crossed for you. MAJOR congrats on your accomplishments this far and best of luck to you in your final term. I can't describe the feeling of walking into the packed gym for the pinning ceremony with my fellow grads, and the entire audience is on their feet cheering and waving.

i agree that you need to call the nurse manager and let her know you haven't heard anything from hr.
it will certainly show your enthusiasm for the job.

Hospital recruiters are often insanely busy. Mine was not only busy, but also disorganized and I probably sent her 5 unanswered emails in the span of 2 months before she finally got back to me. Then when we met she said "Well, I know we've been exchanging email for awhile but it is nice to meet you in person."
Trust me, if they don't want to hire you'll they'll call you and tell you the position has been filled. Unless you're sending upwards of 3 emails or phone calls per week or getting belligerent they're not going to view you as pushy. They're just going to see you as someone who really wants the job.
