Hope you guys are having more fun than I am!

Hey!

I haven't checked the threads for awhile, so sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Are you done with your semester this week? I still haven't gotten my books yet......dreading that.

Hey K--I had my last final today--it was Advanced Physio. I'm so happy that it's over! I still have my 4.0, which I'm sure will be gone come next semester. I also bought my books today...$750 later, I'm poor. Thank goodness for student loans. The only good part was that some really great guy that works in the bookstore carried all 200 lbs. of my books to my car. God love him! I'm going to read a bood for pleasure now and not think about school until the orientation session.

P.S. I officially have all of my stuff done for school. Physical, pee test, blah blah blah. Woo hoo!

So I am assuming that the nursing bundle is the only bundle of books we need for the 4 semesters of nursing school correct?

Congrats to all of you who passed your first semester of nursing school! After you get a little time to recover and breathe, would love to hear the details of what you thought of it and how everything went. Inquiring pre-nursing minds want to know :) :)

no--there are actually additional books that you will need in further semesters, like the ob/peds book, psych, etc. the bundle includes the fundamentals book, med/surg, pharm, pathophysiology, and books like the med reference and skills checkoff workbook, etc.

just as melissa stated, i am dying  to know what to expect my first semester!!! i know you guys need your break but as soon as you are rested, :tbsk: please come share details and any pointers with us!!!!!!:bowingpurthanks from a very appreciative, anxious, pre-nursing student!!!:scrm:

ugh talk about a ton of money!

the only thing i can tell you is be ready to read, read and do a little more reading. in all honesty, it really wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be. stay organized and use a planner!!! you guys have made it this far and actually got in the program, you are going to be just fine!!! i promise!! :yeah:

also, make friends with people in your group! i have met the most amazing people that i have in my life! these girls are amazing and i learn so much from them every day! i love them so much that 8 of us are going to los angeles at the beginning of january for some r&r and a taping of the ellen show! what a way to kick off our second semester eh? haha! but again, you all are going to be just fine!!!

I agree completely!! I was so utterly stressed out before the program started that I considered not even going. But it was not even close to being as bad as I thought it would be. Like StacySpacy said, prepare to read LOTS!! I was a huge procrastinator before this semester started but that changed real fast. We had 2-3 tests a week so, learn to manage your time wisely and study a little each day instead of waiting until the night before. Also, don't let yourself get overwhelmed. Things will be fine and getting flustered will only make things worse.

Do not stress over clinicals. I remember the day before our first clinical, I felt sick even thinking about it, but I loved every minute once things got started! Your instructor will always be around to help and I also got to work with my fellow students.

Also, do not listen to gossip, especially about tests and grades, etc. Most of the time, it isn't true.

Don't be afraid to get to know your classmates and form study groups. You are going to be stuck with these people for the next 2 years and more than likely, they are the only ones who understand what you're going through. I have made some awesome friendships just from my first semester.

Most of all, enjoy your nursing school experience! Aside from the reading and studying, it's actually pretty awesome!!

Oh yeah, it's okay if you don't get all A's. An RN is an RN and an LPN is an LPN regardless of GPA.

First semester was probably my busiest and most difficult.

It felt like staff tried to intimidate and ferret out those who weren't 100% dedicated. Sometimes, it looks like instructors will decide amongst themselves that a certain student isn't "nurse material" and no matter how well that student performs they will find a way to fail them.

However, a lot of the horror stories you hear just aren't true. They never, ever locked the doors at lecture as soon as class started. We had people who were late everyday and there was never a single instructor who said a word. I only met a hand full of students who actually spent hours a day studying and reading. Most of us came to lecture, made notes on Powerpoints, and reviewed notes the night before the test. Everyone screwed up during clinicals at one time or another and we never lost a single student due to a clincial failure.

We actually only lost one student during first semester and I always felt like the

instructors had decided to fail her during our first week. Not fair, but that's NS for ya!

For me, 1st semester was the busiest because, aside from lecture and clinical, we also had lab days when we practiced and tested-out on new skills.

Lab was very intimidating for me because you had the instructors one-on-one attention as you performed each new skill. They would pick apart your performance with a fine-toothed comb and that always shattered my confidence.

During clinical, the instructor was busy watching 8-10 students and I never felt like they were breathing down my neck just waiting for me to slip up. I did my best to look busy at all times and just tried to slide in under the radar.

The student who follows the instructor around all day playing 20 questions ends up getting that instructors undivided attention and that's a BAD THING.

Each consecutive semester has been easier than the one before it. Complex Family clinical during 3rd semester was an exact repeat of OB/Peds during 2nd semester. Even had the same paperwork!

Psych clinical was kinda paperwork heavy d/t very little patient care and a lot of observation. They have to have something to grade, I guess.

If anyone has any specific 1st semester questions, let me know. I'm starting my final semster in Jan. but I still remember what we did during the other semesters.
