I beefed up my summer course load and plan to take MAT 118, COM 102, and IVY 104, all online. Anyone else taking these?
Question for those who are in their first or second semester of nursing classes......Have any of you experienced doubt. I have been wrestling with this since the first day of classes. I feel so overwhelmed and that this may not be for me. Am I alone?? Did any of you experience some doubt in the beginning?? Is this a sign or just overwhelming stress?? I am not the type to easily give up on anything, but I am really considering it. Any opinions or comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks

The first semester was killer on my psyche. I wrestled every day with whether or not this is for me. By the end of clinicals, I gained a little more confidence and came to the conclusion that I want this and come hell or high water, I will get there. I am now in 2nd semester and can't wait to start clinicals. I think most of my classmates last semester felt the same as I did. We have a huge workload and not enough time in a day.
The best advice I can give you is don't bother trying to keep up with all the readings. If you pay close attention in lecture, and go off the power points you will be fine. The only things I read in my books anymore are the nursing considerations and sample care plans. I finished last semester with As and Bs.
First semester, we had Fundamentals, Fun. Lab, Med Surg, MS Lab, MS clinical AND Pharm.
This time, the first 8 weeks we have either MS2 and clnical, or OB and clnical and the 2nd 8 weeks, we take the other one. Thats it!!
Hang in there....it gets better. The only people that failed out last time were the ones that allowed themselves to get overwhelmed and fall behind. Once you fall behind, it's not so easy to catch up.
It's really ok to admit that you have doubts. After all, you're taking in all this new information and most people go into this and find out that nursing is not all teddy bears and rainbows like they had envisioned. It's a dirty job sometimes but it's so worth it the first time you have a patient in clinicals tell you how much they appreciate you being there to do the not-so-fun things that they can't do for themselves anymore. It's very rewarding but still it's not for everyone.
Stick with it a little while longer and see how you feel after you've had a chance to experience some different things.
I wouldn't give advice to not keep up with the readings. It may have been like that the first semester, but if you don't read the book after the first semester, you are not going to be successful. There aren't as many courses after the first semester, but don't think the workload is easier. The second semester can be more difficult. Students fail first AND second AND third semester courses and if anyone thinks they will successfully pass courses without reading, then that is a mistake. Do you really think the instructors can cover everything in lecture? Absolutely not. And they can't spoon feed you exactly what is on the exams....they have to teach you what would be needed if you wanted to work in that area. Other students have made it passed and so will you!

I don't think that you are unusual to be having some doubt. I had plenty of that before I started. The way I have been handling it is: don't think too deep. I have decided to do "baby steps". That is based on a movie named What About Bob. My first step is the first week. I made that. The next step is the second week. The next step is making it to the sixth week, clinicals. After that is is making it through the first semester and so on.
Keep at it awhile, I am sure that you will make it. Doubts are normal, for a normal person. I am sure you will not only do fine, but great. Don't worry about keeping A's, that will take some stress off too. Someone on here said that the formula to remember is C=RN. (that goes for LPN's too!) Just do your best, I am sure it will be more than enough.
Absolutely, A's don't mean everything....but I wouldn't want someone that squeaked by barely passing to be taking care of me either!
What do you call a doctor that graduated in the bottom of his class?
Doctor!
At this point A's are hard to come by but if you work hard you will get them. But it's not the end of the world to walk away with B's or C's either and it certainly doesn't mean you aren't capable of being a nurse because you didn't get all A's. (this coming from someone who earned 3 A's and 3 B's last semester!) To those with doubt, just keep your chin up and keep trucking along, you'll be fine!
