Ivy Tech Spring '10 Applicants

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

This is the "Not In" thread, or for anyone that's planning on applying for Spring Semester by the Sept 1st deadline.

We need love too! :loveya:

My Boring Stats:

A's in prereq's except ANP 2...taking that class now.

Horribly embarrassing TEAS at 76, still have two more tries. (Which is why I'm taking math and phys sci this summer. lol)

Hope to get into the Bloomington or Terre Haute programs. (Yay! Greene county gets region pts at both. lol)

Currently frazzling myself out with 5 online classes

It's nice to meet you....whoever you are....

AnneMarie, I just PM'd you.

Speaking of which, Carlos, I just saw that you had PM'd me a few weeks ago. .. sorry but I never got a notification of it so I never knew it was there till just now!

Lennon, let me find a link for the smock. Just a minute.

The Indy smocks look similar to this, but with a dark green grosgrain ribbon sewn on as trim around the edge of the sleeves.

So Lennon, do you still have any time for life outside of school? You said during the first 5 wks you had some, but how about now? Are you loving it? How do you like your clinicals?

Specializes in MICU - CCRN, IR, Vascular Surgery.

That's pretty similar to our shirts, though we have green stripes sewn in vertically. We kind of look like waitresses from the 50s!

There's definitely less free time now, but still free time. In Med Surg we have class one day a week, and there's a test every day in there. That's what takes up most of the time. But after a few tests you learn about how in depth you need to know stuff and then you start to relax a little bit more. I've really liked learning about the different disease processes so far, that's been really interesting.

Clinicals are going well. We gave flu shots 2 weeks ago (which was totally awesome!), and we started passing meds today! A lot of what you do in clinicals depends on who your teacher is because every teacher likes to do things a little bit differently. I've never felt nervous or scared about going to clinicals, so that's reassuring!

We are all getting worn out from studying so hard every week, but I'm really glad that I'm here and I'm doing this finally! And seriously, paying attention in the pre-reqs and co-reqs has come in handy SO MUCH! Looking forward to Thanksgiving break and getting some extra sleep! :D

Does anyone know when the alternates find out if we got bumped up? I was under the impression that it was supposed to be today, and I was really disappointed when they didn't even mention it...

Lennon, thanks for posting that info about your life as a 1st semester student--It's so great to get a glimpse of what life will be like in a couple of months! I can't believe you got to give flu shots---what an awesome thing!!!

Sunny, since 3 people didn't show up to orientation, they might be moving 3 LPN students up to the ASN spots--They probably just had to wait to see who would actually show-up. Hopefully they'll contact you soon if you're able to move up!

Man, those smock tops are ugly....Wish they were just regular-style scrub tops with huge embroidered STUDENT on the back or something---I think that would still be better than those smock tops! Oh well----It's definitely not a fashion show, so I don't mind! I like the idea of knowing what I'm going to wear on those days versus spending time every morning trying to figure out what in the world I'm going to wear! Plus, no more high heels! Woohoo! If anyone finds great places to get appropriate shoes for lab/clinical, please post. I really want to be able to try things on, which is why I'd rather not order online.

BTW, I PM'd you back, Chris. Just wanted to give you a heads-up since you said you don't check it frequently!

Specializes in Neurology.

Chris thanks for the heads up on the CPR class. My Y location shows something similar and has AED as a different class. Might have to attend one of the classes they suggested.

Here is what I could come up with for the books on the Indy book list. I am not sure it is all correct as far as what they said about the discs and stuff, but somewhat of a reference to let us know what they are charging as compared to the open market. Total for all books before shipping was $510.01. So if what they said was correct and we can get them through the bookstore for between $500 and $600, then they are not gouging us to terribly.

I got my stethoscope, penlight, and scissors today. I felt like such a green newbie. . . "Ummm, I am gonna go to nursing school and I need a stethoscope but have no idea what kind. . ." LOL The saleslady showed me two Littmans that she said a lot of students get, so I just picked one. Littman II SE Lightweight. The ear pieces felt fairly comfortable but I assume it's like a mattress. . . testing it out for a short time doesn't tell you how you're going to like it after using it for a long time.

Lennon--any tips for us newbies about little gadgets/things we might find useful? I'm thinking along the lines of a clip for the stethscope for the waist, a hip pack, something to keep the scissors and penlight in, clipboard?

I tried on a few pairs of white shoes there but didn't find anything that felt right. I tried on Nursemates and Cherokee slipons but I seemed to be between sizes (even with half-sizes). I tried on a pair of $105 Dansko slip-ons but they felt weird. I dunno, maybe after you wear them awhile you get used to them. They were really thick soled, rocker-like. I'll probably just end up getting white athletic shoes.

Where did you go shopping?

Scrubs & Beyond in Castleton. It wasn't as big as I thought it was.

Double, triple, and quadruple check before you buy white athletic shoes. We were told in no uncertain terms at orientation that no athletic shoes were allowed. Then once classes started, we were told that they were okay. So just wait until class starts for those I think.

We were told that we could buy our own stethoscope but that we didn't have to. I chose to buy mine. For keeping clinical things in, I actually bought a makeup storage bag on clearance from Walmart for like $3 and I keep my BP cuff, penlight, mini notebook, bandage scissors and stuff like that in. If need be, I can carry this makeup back in my uniform pocket. Usually I just use it to store stuff in inside of my lab bag and then I just put that mini bag into my backpack for clinicals. I have a clipboard, and it's handy, but no one has said it's required. You could get a waist clip for your stethoscope if you want, I've not seen any people with those down here so far. We were required to have a watch with a second hand to take vitals with, that's one of the few clinical/lab requirements that was absolutely necessary.

It looks like you guys have some of the same books and I do, and if any of them mention a website called "The Point" make sure to use this because it's a *great* website! It has practice questions and videos and review material and I use it to help me get ready for every test. It also has several of the text books with their full text online! I really love that, because then I can read my book anywhere that I can get online. It's awesome!
