Ivy Tech Fall 2011

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

HI! I know that I am not the only one out there working on prereqs to get into the nursing program at Ivy Tech. This thread will be for the Fall 2011 applicants *applying next April! We will get there!!!!

I am now working on APY 101 and Psy 101 this summer online. They are tough, but I am holding my own! A few more weeks. Anyone else out there?

Aces13 - If you have any questions about this study, then you can contact the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, who is conducting the study and there has been press already about it. The simulation study they are involved in is with 9 other community colleges/universities like John Hopkins University. There are many schools out there that currently do more than 25% of the clinical time as simulation. This is a prestigious study that Ivy Tech has been accepted in and prospective students should embrace being part of possibly history in the making. We wish we had this great opportunity, Research has shown the value of simulation and as students we wanted MORE!!! The experience was just as good as in clinical ans you can make mistakes without worrying about hurting the patient. As you said, simulation means different things, but you can do simulation with real life people and not a mannequin.

I have taken the TEAS twice now. I was really unhappy with my science score the first time around, so I re-took it. The first TEAS I scored pretty decent on the reading, math, and language arts. I did horrible on science. The second TEAS, my score dropped in reading and language arts, got a 98% in math, and raised my science score 12%.

I had the EXACT same TEAS test both times. Same questions, same order, everything. So I'm surprised I did worse in 2 areas the second time around.. oh well I guess. I got a 100% on the anatomy portion, a 86% on the life sciences portion.. and then really, really bad on the Earth science portion. It's a shame that there were so many questions on my test about erosion and other things that I personally feel don't contribute to whether or not someone would make a good nurse. Unfortunately, since we aren't able to combine tests.. I have to choose just one TEAS to turn in.

I really hope that my score doesn't greatly effect my chances of getting in. That would be such a bummer, and especially since I'm stuck with this TEAS score for at least 2 years. One of the regions that I'm applying to requires that you only score in proficient, advanced, or exemplary. Sub-scores are used for tie breakers.

I am applying for PN for Bloomington, Columbus, and Terre Haute. I was given some wrong information initially in regards to the RN program, so I won't be able to apply for it this time around.

Good luck to everyone!

bolded, italicized, highlighted, and underlined because i couldn't agree more with you on that one. i remember back when i took the teas iv it asked questions about fault lines and types of rock (igneous vs. metamorphic vs. sedimentary). obviously that was stuff i didn't know very well because, for one, i hadn't had to worry about it since i was a 15-year-old high school student; and for two, since it had no bearing on whether i would be able to administer adequate nursing care, i really didn't care:cool: . i wish they would come up with an entrance exam that would be better able to assess the knowledge (or potential for learning knowledge) we'd need as nurses. i mean, all the other sections i get. math, patients need for us to be able to do math. english and reading, our patients need for us to be able to write and understand written instructions well. science, okay, i get the anatomy, i get the biology and chemistry questions, we do need a fair amount of knowledge on those studies, but rock types and fault lines? for real?

I have a question for anyone who has taken one of the practice exams. I took it like to days ago and my scores were horrible. The science portion asked me about things that I had no clue about. Those of you who took the practice exams, is the actual test less challenging?

Ace: How did you hear about Lawrence not having a PN program this fall and accepting more ASN students? That's very encouraging for me.

That is what they said when I turned in my application. It improves the chances for everyone! :yeah:

Ladytee 2010-

I'm with you! I just finished my 2nd online pre-test and did horrible! I am scheduled to take the TEAS on Tuesday and am freaking out a little bit based on my practice test scores. There were many questions in the science portion that were ridiculous. I hope this is no indication of how I will do on Tuesday:crying2:

"They say that the increased simulation (instead of hands on clinical experience) will not hamper our learning. I am not so sure how I feel about this. I want to call IUPUI and see about how much time they simulate in their lab vs hands on. I don't want to waste my money and learning time on a dummy. I don't think it could possibly be as good as hands on. Opinions?"

I know that I am a little late to the draw here, but the Sim-man is a very good resource. It is just like working with a real human. It is programmable to have heart attacks (among numerous other things), you can take its blood pressure and pulse, and it breathes. It teaches you to follow certain critical steps, and while you're working on Sim-man, you're being monitored. It's a very interesting experience. You also might find

helpful, although it seems to be a bit dated. It gives an overall view of Sim-man, but the ones that are around now are much more high tech. Good luck!!

Good luck on finals!

Whew....Grades posted for me last night. Still in the game....thankfully. Now, where is that darn letter???:banghead:

I agree. I'm getting sooo immmpppaattttiiiieeeennnntttttttttttt!!!!!! :madface::dzed::angthts::flmngmd::hlk:

(i didn't realize until just now that there were so many different emoticons for us to use haha)

@ wannabanrin2012

What the heck are you worried about? So far you had the most points off all the replies I have read, so you should know you will be fine. Do you need to see the letter and actually hold it in your hands, you know you got in, I haven't seen any one else with 180/190...you will be fine stop worrying!
