Ivy Tech Fall 2011

U.S.A. Indiana

HI! I know that I am not the only one out there working on prereqs to get into the nursing program at Ivy Tech. This thread will be for the Fall 2011 applicants *applying next April! We will get there!!!!

I am now working on APY 101 and Psy 101 this summer online. They are tough, but I am holding my own! A few more weeks. Anyone else out there?

I feel your pain about online anp during the summer. Recommendation for anyone considering it: DON'T DO IT! I studied for a minimum of 3 hrs every night except 2 nights for the entire 8 weeks (my husband thought he was a single dad!). Its definately self learn with not much help from the instructors. Lab quiz questions were completely random and little to no help on what to study. No study guides, which always help me most! I studied harder than I ever have before and was 4 points, yes 4 freaking points, from getting my A. I thought I was saving time by taking it in the summer but instead I stressed out an entire summer and gave up precious time with my family which was such a waste bc I prob won't get in for spring and will have to retake it anyway.

Falon, given the new guidelines, id quickly drop anp. Focus on getting As in the other classes and a good teas score. I know this seems like a long road but it will work out how its supposed to. Good luck.

I have to say taking anp 102 was the best thing ever this past summer! I took it in columbus and it was so easy. I never really cracked the book after the first few weeks when I realized how easy it was going to be. Take it in columbus if you can. I really wanted to make the spring application deadline so I took it and eng 111 online. I didn't have a problem pulling out As for both.

OMG! So I have been at Ivy Tech Indy/Lawrence for over a year now trying to get all of my co and pre-requisites done. I just found out about the new guidelines beginning Summer 2011:( I am a little discouraged, because this is my third attempt at A&P 102. I made the mistake of taking it online over the summer and did not do well at all.. I am a mother of three and work full time. Needless to say, Its looking like I am wasting my time taking it a third time if only my first two attempts will be looked at? Especially after Ive spent sooo much money trying to get into this program only to find out that they have changed the guidelines!!! I am FRUSTRATED to say the least. Any advice?

Well, just to remind you: not all hope is lost :) Ivy Tech's nursing program isn't the only ASN program in the state. There are many other colleges out there that offer the degree. There's a sticky in this forum that lists them all, should you be interested in looking at them. So, again, plenty of options still available to you even if they possibly won't include Ivy Tech any longer.

Good news:) I spoke to someone in the Nursing Dept and they will accept my current grade for A&P 102. In hindsight, I think that the new guidelines will be a good thing. Maybe it will help weed out some applicants. Eng and psych will no longer be worth 30 points for an A and there will no longer be regional points..

Sometimes it amazes me the "types" of people that are accepted as well. Shouldn't there be some type of personal interview? Just to make sure that those who are accepted have the "common sense" factor? Just sayin...:)

Glad that you were able to do well taking it online over the summer... it just wasnt for me! I learned alot more in class.. I didnt like the online labs. That was basically all that my online class was. Other than the proctored exams.

Curious as to what the "common sense" factor is and what "types" of students you feel should not be accepted?

How are everyones classes going so far? I just took my anatomy midterm and did less than stellar. I have gotten an A or B on everything in the class so far, but did so horrible on my midterm this week that the only way to keep my current A in the class is to get a 100% on everything else from here on out. I am so, so bummed and really upset about it. I study as much as I possibly can (usually at least 3 hours a day) while caring for a toddler & also working full time. I guess I just need some encouragement that I did not totally throw my chances of getting into nursing school. I'm just really worried about the new guidelines and anatomy being weighted heavier than the other classes. I have not attended a new info session yet to get specifics on that.. does anyone know how much heavier anatomy is weighted? I have A's in english & psych, and have not taken the TEAS yet. ugh.

I read that the anatomy classes will be worth 30 points for an A and the english and psych will be worth 20 points for an A. I think that a B is still worth 20 for the Anatomy classes. I am not sure what Bs are worth for english and psych. Are you taking your Anatomy 1 or 2? Is it online or face to face? I am in Anatomy 2 online and just took the midterm today and I did ok. I count those precious little points all the time...can't miss more than 100 to get an A in the class. There are always a lot of tricky questions and things I have never seen (or didn't study enough) on the tests! It is really hard to get an A...I wouldn't beat yourself up about it. BTW, it looks like the points for getting in this spring were a lot lower...so who knows for fall.

I still need to take the TEAS, too...but I have no idea when to study for it...since I am spending so much time on anatomy, you know? Have you taken it yet??

Yeah, no kidding. In my opinion, that just opens up the doors for stereotyping and bias.

For example, I'm on the younger side of the age spectrum compared to everyone in the RN program at my campus. It doesn't bother me, and it doesn't seem to bother any of the people I go to school with. But I would really have hated for someone in admissions to decide that I was "too young" or didn't have enough life experience to succeed in the program compared to an older applicant.

Thanks for the points info on anatomy!

I am taking Anatomy 1 online. I am definitely wishing I would have been able to take it on campus. By the time I decided to take the class, there were already 10+ on the waiting lists for on campus classes.

I haven't taken the TEAS yet either. I have the study guide from API and I try to look over it whenever possible, but I am having a pretty hard time finding extra time to study for it, with work and anatomy and a child. I think I will try and take it in December or the very beginning of January.

I read that the anatomy classes will be worth 30 points for an A and the english and psych will be worth 20 points for an A. I think that a B is still worth 20 for the Anatomy classes. I have a question about applying to Ivy Tech for the fall.. do they only accept people from IN? Do you guys know of anyone from IL at any of the Ivy Tech schools?

Thanks!

Man, being on this site makes me so anxious. Assuming all goes according to plan, I'll be applying for the Indy RN program for the fall 2011 cohort. My eventual goal is to become a nurse anesthetist, so right now I'm trying to get courses out of the way that are either directly required for that program or are prerequisites for other courses I plan on taking once I've graduated from Ivy Tech and have enrolled in an RN-to-BSN track (probably) at ISU. My class schedule this semester is Calc 211, Chem 105, and APHY 102. Everything's pretty good so far. I have all A's--though, there is a midterm coming up here shortly in my APHY 102 course :X. What I'm really worried about is next semester, though. I signed up for 17 credit hours of some pretty intensive coursework, and the more I look at it the more fearful I become :uhoh3: I really don't want to ruin my gpa by taking Bio 201 (the Microbiology course), Math 212, APHY 201, AND Chem 106 and doing poorly in them because I got overwhelmed by the courseload/content. Has anyone out there either taken these classes already, or is in the process of taking them? What kind of study tips do you have that would help someone succeed in the classes? Thanks!

P.s.

All those uneasy nerves notwithstanding, I'm still super stoked about fall 2011. I can't wait, and I hope that I get to meet some of you all in person!:)
