Ivy Tech Fall 2017 Hopefuls

Published

Is there anyone else out there, or is it just me? :)

I'd love to connect with others who are applying for the Fall 2017 nursing program.

I am signed up to complete my prerequisites in the spring. English and Public Speaking are already done with an A, from a prior degree with Ivy Tech. They are also going to waive the IVY112 class because I am an Ivy Tech grad.

So I am signed up for APHY101, MATH123, PSYC101, and SOC111.

On one hand, I can't wait for classes to start! On the other hand, with the Holidays, I know the time is going to fly by.

I have the TEAS study guide from Amazon (ATI TEAS Secrets Study Guide: TEAS 6 Complete Study Manual, Full-Length Practice Tests, Review Video Tutorials for the Test of Essential Academic Skills, Sixth Edition: 9781516703838: Medicine & Health Science Books @ Amazon.com) and I am studying it and looking through the first practice test. So far, so good! Lots of info there to cover. Will keep me busy, for sure.

About me: My degree is in Business Administration and my work history is mostly in accounting, but I've been home with our 3 boys for the past 16 years. We have homeschooled for the past seven years. They all went to public school this year, and they are doing GREAT! Now I need a new direction, as well... I've got maybe 30 years of working ahead of me, and I want to have a solid career. I hated being stuck at a desk. Nursing ~ here we go!

I'll be in my last semester this fall as well. I'm sure we will have class together if you are in the Thursday morning capstone class. Congrats.

I've been wondering about you. Hope all is well. Good to hear from both of you!

Thank you. I work at Riley hospital as a PCA now and my unit manager wants to keep me on the unit as a nurse if she has a spot for it. She is good about keeping her people. So early 2019 I should be wearing red at Riley children's hospital

Hi guys, love that you are all still around. I just applied for Spring 2019. How many books did you guys need to buy and how much did it cost? I am trying to figure out. Also, when do would I need to complete immunizations and turn in the immunization records? Based on your experience. I'm going to be looking over the Online Nursing Information session power point again just in case.

It's all pretty expensive. It isn't just the books. You will need to buy lab kits, simulation kits. I would look at the course numbers in the outline and plug it into the bookstore. It will pull up what you need.

Alright thank you :)

Do I have to buy everything at once?

Oh goodness no. It's by semester. You need the initial lab bag. Then the other sim bags are for your clinical class on certain simulation days that are spread throughout the entire program. The medsurge book stuff covers all of you medsurg classes.

Are you still applying to two campuses? The required materials will be different in different places, I think. For example we did not have the simulation packs like Leadkrm is talking about. And we had to buy different books for complex med surg (last semester of our program).

Good point. I didn't think about it being different at each campus

@Leadkrm That's awesome. I have no idea where I want to work. Working as a PCA is invaluable experience. Congrats and yes I have class on Thursday mornings. Have you already taken OB/Peds? Any advice?

Ah. I have capstone on Thursday morning. Honestly I think the ob portion of the class was severely underserved. The teacher told us that she usually gets C's when she goes back and takes her own tests for fun. She would come in exam day and complain that's she's exhausted from being up until 2 or 3 am because she was writing our exam. That being said, she is a really nice lady and I actually enjoyed her personality a lot. The clinical portion is simple as long as you aren't afraid of kids and pregnant women. Take it day by day. I am retaking two classes this fall. Complex medsurg lecture and ob/peds lecture. I am hoping to get my head on straight and finish up strong

That's pretty much what I've heard from LPN students. The tests are really difficult no matter how much you study. I'm most nervous about this class than any of the other ones, but we'll get through!
