I need advice/guidance. Im currently enrolled in Itt tech Breckinridge school of nursing class of 2017. I'm completing med surg 1 next week. In the media today I've read several articles stating Itt may be shut down because they have lost all federal funding and are no longer able to accept new students who need federal aid (so basically they'll go into bankruptcy). Last month we lost our Dean. Our assistant dean resigned yesterday. And the recruiter's last day was Monday. Their credits won't transfer. Our school has no update for us and states they are awaiting the director to take the next step-whatever it may be. The articles online state the schools would refund the money we paid or set up an agreement with a school. The school itself has not commented on this. Im a little upset we weren't notified and had to find this out from the media and a year has been wasted of our time if no school accepts our credits. Last thing I want to do is start over. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Yes I am pleased because I did the work. The same books and testing systems we used just like everyone else. I am pleased because my professors are some of the Best Nurses that have degrees from some of the best schools in my area, and they taught me very well. I am pleased because I went through the nursing struggle like everyone else, and the struggle is real. I am pleased because I graduated and will receive my degree, and I am very proud of it and I am not ashamed. I will pass the NCLEX because I was smart enough to pass my tests in class. I passed my Exit Hesi, first try 1193, and I am very confident.
A bit premature you say! With the sweetest voice I have right now I'm not living in a fairy tale land nor did I just come from the planet Mars. My 2 PP post says a lot about how I feel. I just completed my program 2 days ago. So of course this is upsetting. At the same time the doors are not closed my grades are in the system, and I have the faith that everything will be complete for me and my graduating class. Most schools don't give you your degree until after your ceremony so yeah that takes a while. In addition I work for one of the best healthcare systems that's not premature its a fact. Yes I will become a RN and that's a fact.
I have always heard bad things about ITT and other nursing schools so to each their own rather accredited or not. I made a choice and I am happy with that decision.
You better believe I will be back. Jer. 29:11
If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything. Your entitled to your opinion and so am I. My faith is to strong to feel defeated.
OP- I am very sorry for you and the thousands of student like you who are going to be left holding the bag on this. But the honest truth is this: you have to start again from zero. Those of us on the boards here who have been warning student for years about for-profit school take no pleasure in being right. But it's been brewing for a long, long time- and you, unfortunately, are the 'collateral damage' of this greedy institution.
Yes, very many of the for-profit post secondary schools have frightening financial postions. This is not a surprise to many who follow post secondary education.
The number one for-profit, based on student enrollment, and number two EDMC owner of South University are not doing well financially and still continue to enroll without disclosing their precarious finances. The worst part is that all this has been allowed to exsist without substantial oversite from the accrediting agencies or until now the Department of Education. *See the Corinthian College debacle.
You came here asking for advice; just because you seem to not agree with that advice doesn't mean it's not valid. This article lists NCLEX pass rates- ITT Tech Breckenridge, with the exception of 1 campus, is below the national average for first time NCLEX pass rates. Most of those campuses are far below the national average.
Yes, grad and retention rates are the most important. Schools today are too expensive so do the prerecs on the cheap at a community college. Accredited schools are a must, but even most of the worst performers are accredited so this metric is of dubious value if they seem to be an enrollment mill without those credible grad and retention standards. Go to (collegescorecard.ed.gov) to start you school exploration. And watch out for the soft-soap from recruiters. It's your time and money and no one is doing you favors. Go to the most reputable school you can. Know that employers do care if you have credible credentials even though they might not confide this to you.
Did you attend the school? Also please cite your reputable sources if you have not been in the nursing program at Itt tech. I've call numerous hospitals in the area who indeed will hire Itt grads. I even worked for a facility that does.
So what. In two weeks the school will be kaput. So go shill for some other waste of time, effort and precious dollars.
What's funny is that I came asking for advice/guidance. Not ones opinion of the school or what they think they may know from what they've read online. As with any review made online one must question the validity-disgruntled employee/student? What's even more ridiculous is the fact that nurses are supposed to be empathetic individuals-most who have commented have been condescending and made me feel more like a failure. So the next time you wonderful nurses decide to give some "advice", take your bias out of it. A simple "I have no expertise in this, good luck to you", or "from what I've heard you'll more than likely have to start over".

This is a discussion board. Once you hit the post button, you no longer have control of the replies. It's how message boards work. No, you aren't going to hear only what you want to hear. Opinion based on reported facts are perfectly valid responses. If you can't handle the replies you receive, perhaps a message board is not the way you should be seeking advice.

Smh. I didn't ask to be coddled. I ask for guidance. Not some ragdey comments about how my school is subpar.

And I think that myself and a couple of others have given you solid advice. The advice that yes, you will have to start over, AND to next time research your school before giving them your money, in my mind, is very good advice.
You asked for advice and you got it. I'm not going to sugar-coat it or commiserate with you about how unfair this is. I don't think these schools should be in business, but they are as we will in a capitalistic society here. Which, is a good thing most if the time. But that's where people need to do their due diligence and research what they spend their money on. Schools that make commercials during Jerry Springer should not be attended.
These schools prey on a certain demographic. They spin you all these fairytales about how your life will change for the better and don't you want to do better for your family? They use pressure tactics and lies because they know that 80% won't do their research.
You can research many of my previous posts, where I caution people about
these schools. I am on a mission against these places. They often leave the consumer holding the bag and huge student loans. And for those that have theirs forgiven, guess who pays for that? All of us do. All of us that pay taxes do. That includes you.
I take no joy in telling people after the fact that they were scammed. But it's exactly what happened here and I want you to do some research next time.
ITT Tech no longer accepting new students following government ruling - 13 WTHR Indianapolis
"Financial analysts, like CNBC's Herb Greenberg, say the recent developments are clear signs the company is going out of business.ITT is at the center of several federal and state investigations focused on its finances, management and recruitment.
It also recently lost its accreditation, and the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) predicted ITT was unlikely to become in compliance.
On Monday, ITT's website homepage was stripped down to include only the sentence, We are not enrolling new students,†and a few other links to basic information."

It is a big mess. You actually researched this school and were pleased with it despit the fact you may not get a college degree and owe $13k? ITT is more like $60k for an ADN. So, I'm hoping you paid some cash is addition to your "$25k" scholarship. Which, by the way, the give to everybody. I know of people that tried to go there and they both fed me the scholarship bit as well.
I'm really not trying to be harsh. But saying you are pleased with a program when you don't even have your degree, ATT, passed NCLEX, or have a job, is a bit premature. I hope it all happens for you, I really do. I hope you can come back in three months and say it all went smoothly and I'm now a working RN.
