Is there any type of nursing I can do?

Published

Ever since I got out of nursing school I have not been able to do well in a hospital setting. I've tried critical care, I've tried med/surg, hospice.....nothing seems to be working. Can anyone suggest another type of nursing that I might be able to try? I'm afraid nursing may not have been a good choice for me in spite of having done well in school. .....

Thanks........

Why aren't they working? That's the key. Anyone can list all the possibilities for you, but you can already do that. If you want meaningful suggestions, I suggest you give us a little more information.

What is it about you and your previous positions that didn't work out?

What are your particular strengths in nursing? What do you really like about nursing? What aspects of nursing are you good at and enjoy the most?

Such information will help you (and the readers here) to get a sense of which type of nursing would fit you best.

Not that this is the case with you but I know a few new grads, mostly older fwiw, that did great with book work in nursing school but have been unsuccessful on the floor. Not that it means you need to change careers but I would explore the issues you are having in hopes of figuring out why you aren't doing well. Good luck.

How long have you been at this? Have you stayed in any one setting long enough to get comfortable and competent? New grads often have such difficulty tolerating the discomfort and anxiety involved in making the transition to practicing RN that they give up and move on, assuming they are the problem, when that's not the case at all, and then have the same experience at the next job they try. Sometimes it's just a matter of gritting your teeth and suffering through the first year or so, and things get better as time passes.

I think the other posters are right. You need to figure out why you are not doing well in the hospital setting. Be specific, and honest with yourself about what it is you can't stand. I once worked with a new grad that couldn't stand to touch the pt. I'm not kidding. She knew it was a problem in school, but thought it would pass after graduating and becoming a nurse.
