You all probably don't remember this, but I was terminated from school back in May for failing the foley check-off. Well I went back July 9th. Today I was terminated for good for failing to wear gloves at clinicals with a patient who has chronic UTIs. Of course I know you're suppose to wear gloves!!! But stupid me touches the clamp on the catheter bag gloveless with 2 of my instructors standing there! How dumb can ya get????

What the f#&% is wrong with me????? In April I turned a patient with herpes without wearing gloves. Listen, I'm a very intelligent woman but why am I soooooooooo damn DUMB??????? What now? I'm no spring chicken.

I mentioned the fact that I'm a student and I'll make mistakes - Well that didn't fly - "You can't make mistakes like that at the expense of the patient! I'm afraid to give you any patients!"

Find another place. Hopefully one that understands that if you knew how and why to do everything you'd be teaching not attending the school.

If I remember correctly, you said something before about how the instructors were unfair to you...above and beyond the appropriate actions for making a mistake.

Sounds like this again has come back to haunt you.

Can you go to any other school? Like some others have said, you're a student - you really are supposed to make some mistakes! That's the whole purpose of school! ;)

I bet you'd be amazed at the difference a new and supportive atmosphere could make.

I sit here in amazement that your school allows no room for errors. I have heard many stories over the years, but was lucky enough to go to a private college. Our instructors would answer any questions we had. I have a friend that was also dismissed for asking a question prior to check offs. She was told if she had to ask, she couldn't do the procedure.

I remember the first time I started an IV. I showed her my supplies to make sure I had them right. Then she asked me if I wanted to pray about it before I went in! LOL. So, just know that there are good instructors out there. Don't give up! We need more nurses!!!!

Sure reminds me of an orientation I had once: my "precepter" would wait until I made a mistake and THEN jump all over me!

Your instructors should be there to GUIDE you. Every procedure every day should not be a pass/fail test!

I'm with everyone else: try a different school. Also, the idea of working as a CNA is a good one.

I was one of those who was "marked" in nursing school after a disagreement with my advisor- they were still trying to kick me out 6 weeks before graduation!

I'm with the others. Obviously you and this school are not a good match, for whatever reason. Do you have any other options? (I only ask because I live in an area where my school is the ONLY nursing school available)

I'm sorry, but it really seems like your instructors do not want you to succeed. Any failings you have as a student are their failings as instructors, if you have used them as the resource they should represent.

Don't think this means you are a failure, or are not meant to be a nurse. Nothing could be further from the truth. You just need a more supportive and nurturing environment, perhaps some practical experience, and the commitment to follow through.

Also the very idea that your instructor is afraid to give you any patients to me speaks volumes of the faith she has in her teaching and mentoring ability. Not all instructors are good ones, as you know. Her opinion is not necessarily the right one.

By no means are you stupid! Hey your new at this stuff we have all done something like this. Try a different school. Sounds to me the school you were attending was very tough and rigid, if I couldn't get something right my instructors should me the correct way and helped me to learn. Learning takes time, especially if it is something new and foreign to you. Take a deep breath and try again, don't be too hard on yourself.

--Change schools.

--If you want to be an RN get into an RN program.

--Take some classes on test taking if your school offered them, they helped me big time.

--Practice your skills on friends and family members if possible. A friend of mind practiced for foley (just pretending of course) on her boyfriend. He got a good laugh out of it and she aced the test (after repeatedly F&*@ing it up in class!).

--As far as your gloves, i had the same problem a couple of times. Just try to think about what you could possibly be touching and then make sure your gloves are on. Sounds silly, but it works.

My grades were all in the 90's....no problem there. I am thinking about changing schools. The nearest one is 75 miles away and part of the one I was in but with a different director. I called and they said I may be able to get in where I left off. I'll know more tomorrow. The big problem is transportation, as my SO will have the same hours, works here in town, we only have one car and there is zippo public transportation here in the boonies!! Well, there is no way I'm wasting the last year I just went through!!!!

Is moving a possibility? I moved for school and am SO glad I did. Ended up at a different school than the one I was planning on attending here! Good luck with the transportation.

Could your SO carpool? Maybe there would be other students you could ride with?
