Is it suicide to take Micro and A&P2 together over the summer

Published

Hi everyone!

I am registered to take A&P 2 and Microbiology this summer. I keep hearing I should take one or the other but not both over the summer. I can't decide. I really want to take both because I have the best professors lined up and neither teach in the fall. However, I need A's in both courses and summer semester is half the length of a full semester. I don't want to over do it and then end up with bad grades in one or in both but at the same time I think I can pull it off getting A's in both during the summer b/c I have good professors and I will put in the effort. I do have 2 little ones at home though, a 4 y.o. and 1 y.o. Can anyone weigh in on this and tell me if it is a good idea or bad idea or BTDT? I appreciate it! :D

Thanks,

Robin

No, I am at Kennesaw State in Ga.

Taking both is a little crazy. Im taking A&PII right now and there is no way I would take another science class. Its 4 hours two day a week for lab and lecture in a way its really like two classes plus Im taking college algebra. I think it would be fine to take both if it were a regular semester. Im takin Microbiology and Human biology with precalculus this fall. If you want to do well I suggest just taking one of them this summer and the other in the fall.

Since it is over the summer, I wouldn't suggest it. I think you should take ap2 so you can finish with AP. That way, your mind will still be fresh when they mention terms from AP1. Just my :twocents: :)

I'm taking A & P II and Micro this summer but not simultaneously. Each class is really fast-paced as they only last 4 weeks each. I'm already reading for the A & P II class which starts June 2nd. I also have a study guide for Micro that I'll start reviewing in the one week break I'll have in between A & P II (ends in late June) and Micro (starts July 6th). I start the actual nursing classes for my BSN in the fall so I guess this will be good preparation for all the reading I'll have to do for those classes.

Good luck! I am so jealous you get to start nursing classes this fall! :)

Hi Robin,

I just finished Advanced A & P and I thought it was more difficult then General A & P for sure. With that being said I am currently taking Micro for the summer semester and it seems to be very time consuming and detailed. Many people in my class have said that they tried to take both at the same time and ended up dropping Micro because it was just too much to do at once.

My advice to you would be don't overwhelm yourself because you won't be doing yourself any favors. You want to get the most out of these classes.

Good Luck,

Leesha

I was wondering the same thing, it's like the closer you get to finishing your pre reqs the more difficult it gets to scheduling which science classes you should take together

what about about AP1 with Micro? is that still too challenging?

I just got my syllabus for summer semester and we are doing THE ENTIRE BOOK in 8 weeks! We are using Microbiology: Principles and Explorations. It is a big book- 25 chapters. I know there is no way I could take it along with A&P 2 over the summer now! I am not sure how I'll be able to do JUST that class now! I need to do the micro though b/c it is just at a lot better time for me than micro.

I think for you to get appropriate feedback, you're going to need to divulge your school so you can solicit input from students where you're attending.

However if this helps, I attend an accellerated cirriculum school (10 week semesters) and I'm currently taking AP I and Micro (from what I've heard from other students at my school, AP I is harder than AP II). It's alot of work, but not impossible. I have to admit though, my daughter is a teenager and pretty much fends for herself, so I'm free to study fairly uniterrupted. Your little ones are quite an interuption to your studies, I'm sure.

I think it all really boils down to --- does your scheduling have enough wiggle room to delay one of the classes and maybe take something else in it's place during the summer? Or will it throw your semesters off because one of the classes is a pre-requisite for something else you need to take later? If you've got the wiggle room, I'd give yourself a bit of a break to ensure the 'A'.

Best of luck to you !!

Thanks! Actually, I have wiggle room so I don't NEED to take them both together. My school has a 1 year wait b/t application and the interview so I have 2 more semesters before I can even start the program *assuming I get in*. I only have A&P 2, Micro, Organic Chem, and Developmental Psych left to take. I am taking micro this summer. So that means I'll be taking A&P2 and Developmental Psych in the fall and then Organic Chem in the spring. It's actually a really laid back schedule so I have no reason to pile up the classes during the summer. I mainly wanted to take the A&P and the Micro together this summer b/c the best professors for those classes only teach in the summer and not in the fall or the spring. But I am just going to have to settle for getting a different professor b/c I don't think it is worth it to take both classes together during the summer just so I can get my teacher preference LOL!!!

If you can't swing an A in those two courses in one term, you'll probably never make it through nursing school. It might be a good way to gauge what you're capable of with two dependents before investing more time and money.

Thanks for replying. I guess it's time for an update

I did not take the two together. I took micro by itself and then A&P 2 the following semester. I can't remember what if anything I took with A&P 2, it has been a while, almost 4 years now I think. I am glad I took the classes by themselves because I really was able to concentrate on and learn the material. In fact I highly recommend people take A&P1, A&P2, and Micro with easy classes or alone in order to really learn it. I did get into nursing school and I'm actually just about done, I finish in July with my BSN- Woot! So much of the program has been easier for me because of my attention in those science pre-reqs. I do agree with the last poster however, that nursing school is much harder than anything you'll ever take in pre-reqs so anyone reading this... be prepared  and GL!
