I'm jumping in with both feet and want to get the ball rolling.
I'm a 33-year-old SAHM of a three-year-old. I have a Bachelor of Arts (Religious Studies) and Bachelor of Journalism (Magazine Design) degree. I want to start knocking out my prereqs and enter into a BSN accelerated program when my daughter heads off to kindergarten.
Here's my question...can I complete all of these prereqs entirely online (without having to visit a campus for tests)?
I'm open to enrolling in online courses from any good, accredited college/university from across the nation.
I live in rural Missouri and am having a hard time finding exactly what I'm looking for locally.
Prereqs:
Anatomy and Physiology I with lab
Anatomy and Physiology II with lab
Microbiology with lab
Nutrition *
Statistics
General Psychology (Already fulfilled.)
Human Growth and Development (across the lifespan) *
* Most interested in these two right now.
PS - Will I be looked down upon for taking online courses? And, would it be odd for me to take classes at various schools?
I don't know about nutrition you may have to call edukan or one of the kansas community colleges that offer it as that is just a consortium for most of the kansas community colleges. I took nutrition at the university and didn't take it online but most community colleges offer it online, check your states community college for nutrition too.
has anyone taken A & P's online...if so..how was it and how does lab work....also..to the poster who took micro online.....how do you do lab?
these 3 are the only ones i have as co-reqs..i get these done then i will just have nursing 2,3,4.....i plan on testing out of nursing 1....
thanks!!
I'm currently taking A&P II online as a 5 week course.
It's a lot of work, although I'm honestly finding it a lot easier than A&P I which I took in person during a whole semester...
Lab is done with Anatomy and Physiology Revealed. We are given a list of structures that we need to be able to identify, then my professor makes a test with A&P Revealed images and we take it...so other than not doing any actual dissection, it's just like lab in person.
You might look at EduKan.com. It's part of the Kansas University Program designed to help train rural health professionals; and is rigorous and fairly inexpensive. No extra out-of-state tuition. I think around $600 a course, and they use the same book for both A&P courses, which I really appreciated.
I took A&P I and Microbiology in Fall, now in A&PII. They do not offer Nutrition, and I don't know about Statistics, as I had two semesters in grad school. Like you, I already had a degree (MS) but could not get into my local university's classes due to overcrowding related to budget cuts. I've been accepted into an MSW Top 20 ranked (in person, not online) program and they have said nothing derogatory about my transferring these in. It might be different if you didn't already have a degree with evidence of capacity to learn.
Obviously I would have preferred to take them in "real life" settings, but I have still learned an amazing amount, including some dissection. The Virtual Microbiology lab is a little fake-y but still provides a sense of how the process works and requires the same procedures onscreen as a regular lab (my cousin is a lab tech and was surprised at how well it represented the general concepts).
Hope this helps, and best of luck.
I took most of prereqs online. Anyone can go to this college as it is a community college and is accredited, but do not let it fool you, it is very hard. They also have these classes for 8 week sessions if you want to get them out of the way quickly. But be forewarned, these classes take anywhere from 15-20 hrs of study time per week...really. You have to get a proctor in your area for tests which are computer based. I don't know what out of state fees are but in state tuition is $71 per credit hour and it is in Arizona. All the labs are done at home. They will make sure ALL of your paperwork of transcripts are there before you are allowed to register,, but after the first time, you can do it all online. They also have free tutoring available.
Anyway the school is Rio Salado collegeand here is their website. rio"]http://www.rio.maricopa.edu/
There is a Nutrition class available at IDL Online College Courses for Credit | University of Georgia. Out of state is a little more expensive, but not ridiculous. Actually they have quite a few courses.
Also, I was the one who took Microbiology online. There were two different profs who did the final differently. For one you had to find a lab and go in and show proficiency on the procedures we'd studied. The other did not require those, but had some very hard questions posed along with each lab that required outside resources to answer.
Like an earlier poster said, these do not show as "online" courses on transcripts. The hard part is getting all the darn transcripts transferred for the application process, it takes time, and a little more money.
Best of luck.
Sing Dance Run Life,Where are you taking a 5week A&P class? Can you list the college please.
Thanks
Broome Community College with Dr. Musa. Although it's online, and pretty much self-taught, it's a very good class! Also, everything is online, and no proctor is required. (The tests are all open book, but timed, so you can't look everything up).

Have you seen a nutrition class at edukan.org? I've looked through all of the sections, but no nutrition. Wondering whether they might teach it in the spring instead of fall.
Thanks so much for the info!!
