Is organic chemsitry needed at these Cal-States?

Published

Hello :) I looked at the RN-BSN requirements for the following Cal-States: San Diego State, Cal-State Bakersfield, and Cal-State Northridge, but I'm not exactly sure if I need to take organic chemistry or not? Any help is appreciated, thanks sooo much! :redpinkhe

I don't think any Cal States require Organic Chem for Nursing students. For further clarification, each university should have a list of prerequisites posted on line.

I can speak for San Diego State, as I have applied for Fall 09--yes, they do require you take Organic Chemistry. But I would also check with each individual program that you're considering.

Cal State San Marcos does... and I'm fairly confident all Cal State schools do.

If you are looking for a program in southern Calif that doesn't require it, check out National University's BSN program.

yep, I go to sdsu, and we had to do O-Chem.. oh I loved that class..

Oh dang it :( Chem is not exactly my strong point, so needless to say I'm worried about Organic Chem... Thank you for all your replies :) I will be graduating from my ADN program at a community college next June, so I'm just looking ahead to see what classes I'll need to apply to some schools I'm interested in.

you know what? It wasnt mine either.. at all!. I barely got a C in regular chem.. thank goodness we didnt get points for that class. However, I felt organic chem was much easier to understand vs. gen chem.. What helped me.. Get a great tutor (I found one on craigslist!)... It helped me get an A!

Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Long Beach, and Azusa Pacific did not require Organic Chemistry in 2006/2007. It is too bad if they are adding more requirements. It already takes quite a while to finally reach a BSN after going the ADN route.

O Chem needed at San Jose State University. I also found it easier and more interesting than non organic chemistry but that was a few moons ago;)

Hmmm...yeah, I will definitely have to look into getting a tutor. I had one in regular chemistry, but she was a student who did group tutoring sessions and was paid by the school, so it was free to students; but they don't offer that for the Organic Chem class, which is too bad.

O-chem is way easier than gen chem IMO....only a few atoms/molecules to worry bout and the reactions were much simpler.....get a good foundation with the first few chapters and you'll be ok

CSULB and CSUF (and most all other BSN programs) have required a chemistry class for years. They changed the required Chemistry course in 06-07 to a survey course covering inorganic, organic, and biochem for nursing students. Prior to '06, RN-BSN students needed two courses for CSULB.
