Is it normal for nurses to enjoy hunting??

Nurses Men

Published

Look I am not a nurse yet I have about a year left in my program and god willing I can sit for the NCLEX. However, I love hunting and fishing do you guys enjoy Hunting or fishing and do you ever have time to go??

I live on a lake, I fish everyday in the Summer. I have no qualms about it. I don't hunt because it is not my cup of tea but I work with several nurses, male and female that routinely hunt. I do enjoy foxhunting but in my part of the country its all drag hunting and the hounds are not actually chasing the fox.

Don't care much for fishing, but I've never been hunting. I don' t think there are any hunting spots at all here down in SoCal; however, I've been interested in picking up a gun license. My bro has a few guns in which I've shot with him at the range a few years ago. Now that I have some monies, I've been interested in picking up some sort of bolt action rifle.

I'm not a vegetarian, but doesn't hunting and then preparing the meat require A LOT of work?  That is too much involved stuff for me. Just like I could sew my own clothes, but I know that just requires too much doing on my part. I much rather hunt at the meat department at my local store, even that can be too much for me.

LOL - Hunting is a lot of work! You have to make sure your gun/bow is in good working order. You have to hike in to where the game is, Find and kill the animal in most humane way possible. Field dress then pack the meat out. Once home you have to butcher and age the meat. Then there is the cooking as wild game while healthier than farm raised meat needs to be prepared in ways that don't ruin it. This is precisly why I don't really enjoy hunting anymore. I hunt with my camera as I enjoy the outdoors which allows that the 12 point buck to live another day.

Hppy

I'm spent already. Where's the nearest In and Out?

If given details of all that is involved with hunting, most people will back out of doing it. Especially in the instant world we live in today. Not too many people have the patience to do farming.

I have about 2000 square feet of garden space but find digging in the ground a lot of work - So I am doing a lot of container gardening. Found pots made out of durable material and can be cleaned in a cloths washer after harvest.

Hunting is not abnormal. I’m sorry that your indoctrination has made you feel guilt about a very useful skill and a relaxing sport. Keep doing what you like.

I’m sure some of my coworkers hunt, but tete story ... at the rural hospital where I did my nursing school Practicum they don’t schedule elective surgeries during deer season because the surgeons go deer hunting.

Hunting and fishing are VERY popular among the men in nursing I work with. Some of the women I work with also enjoy it and those that don't usually have a husband, father, or brother who does. Also very long tradition of small family farms in the area.

Very socially acceptable to discuss hunting, fishing & guns in my hospital, in fact that and the Packers are probably THE most discussed topics.

But then I live in the Midwest. YMMV

Same here.

I haven't went hunting in years, but enjoyed it when I was younger(Deer/rabbit). If I really wanted to go though, I'm pretty sure I could make time on my days off during hunting season to go, but it's just something I don't desire as much now. I do occasionally do skeet/target shooting when I sometimes get together with family/friends.

Now fishing on the other hand... I still like and do ?. Over the past year I have been finding more time to go.

Specializes in ICU.

Never been hunting, but would like to, haven't fished for years, but if you like it; go for it.  I think harvesting your own meat gives you a greater appreciation for it than just plunking down a $20 at the grocery store.  Hunters are some of the most ardent conservationist; they understand the natural balance firsthand.
