well other than resucitation of newborns, accessing IV's on veins as thin as hair and not being able to communicate with your patient and having anxious parents hovering - it is a piece of cake. I have seen infants born with gastroschesis, spina bifida and other issues that were as sick as any adult in ICU.
Is it hard to find jobs in the nicu or nursery right away? They seem to be the easiest jobs in the hospital. Is there anything difficult about them?
Here's the thing: if you work in a nursery, you can have 4-6 babies who require total care (i.e. feeding, diaper changing, assessment, etc). Every 3 hours. You will be running your butt off to keep up with that (remember how people at home have trouble with just one baby?)
If you work in NICU, you'll have 1-3 patients and be running your butt off too. I took care of one patient a few weeks ago (on a 7a-7p shift) and didn't eat lunch until 3pm (after charge nurse came to take over because I was still doing multiple interventions) and left my shift 30 minutes after it ended just to catch up on charting.
Slow-paced beside nursing doesn't really exist.
My mom is 50, I don't think she can really handle a med surg job. I just think she needs a slower paced job in a not too busy part of the hospital.
Why don't you let your mother worry about what sort of a job she can handle. I'm older than your mom, and I'd be pretty insulted if you were writing this sort of thing about ME.
