Is it just me (perhaps), or does disrespect by an attending ruffle feathers?

Maybe it's just my issue (likely), or is it an issue for others when/if a scenario such as mine you might encounter. Working alongside a fellow nurse to help do a cath/blood cultures on a child. I got the blood, but neither of us could cath this infant. Some anatomical difficulties, we suspect. Relayed this to resident who blew me off deferring to this other nurse as the "peds rock star" and then the attending approached this nurse (who is male) and when we relayed the cath difficulties (since we both took a turn, the other nurse first, then myself) the attending didn't acknowledge me. He responded to and spoke only to this other nurse, who was standing next to me. The attending was in front of me, directly in my line of vision, maybe 2 feet from my face. I was miffed about this. He's a young attending. New to the game. I told this nurse that ticked me off, that he was disrespectful (this attending smirks all the time too). This nurse said "he's known me for three years." I told him that I don't care about that, it's not about that. It's about the fact that I'm a professional, with let's face it, far more years of clinical experience than this doc (and this peds nurse who is newish to the ER). Just because I didn't work on a peds floor doesn't mean I don't have that experience of peds population and MORE being in the ER. What is wrong with egotistical, chauvenistic docs? Now that I know he is this way, it's just knowledge that I can tuck in my back pocket and let it go in the future, but just wanted to vent this out. Aggghhhhhh. I get annoyed when there's any assumption on anyone's part that I don't know my job WELL. I don't assume a doctor doesn't know what he's doing until he has *proven* himself to me, so I don't allow that way of thinking to enter my mind. They don't know me, bottom line. I judge people on their merits, not on this ridiculously low threshold of where I think all people are until they prove themselves to me. How arrogant would that be?

Ok, all gone. Time for the next shift. :smokin:

DTHFYTR, LOL. It should amuse me, but sometimes it just gets at me. I guess you can't change these few.... but they would realize, at some point, that nobody likes a human being like that.

well, let me take that back. The guys don't find anything wrong with that. They don't see it. It's a man's world, baby.

yes, thank you!!

curious, was this other nurse able to do the cath?

disrespect sucks

Sometimes these slights which we choose to take so seriously are ever so unconsciously done.

I bet most of us, have habits/traits we would aggressively deny not having. Like your colleague said, he's known him far longer than he has you. It may just have been his comfort level(he's a new attending, you said?)

Sheesh, not to discount your feelings, but we truly NEED to stop over-analysing situations. If you're going to dice every little thing.

Geez, you just looked at me funny, I take offense
:p

And I love them for it-it makes for an easier work place without nit-picking. To be sure, I'm against the sexist-workplace ideas but I also love it when people choose not to be drawn into percieved situations as this:)

PS- Massed, disrespect by ANYONE rankles:)

Specializes in Home health was tops, 2nd was L&D.

Glad OP got that out in the open.. he will never change until he messes up with one of the "BOYS" and gets put in his place!! We could pray for it to be sooner and not later:D

I don't necessarily agree with that. I had a similar situation with one of the ED docs recently. He was an arrogant a******, even in front of patients. At first, I ignored it, but he was just like that every shift I worked with him, which was often.

Finally, I spoke with him in private and let him know that what he was doing was inappropriate and unacceptable (that's the short version). I didn't get upset, didn't raise my voice, and was respectful. I didn't expect it to make any difference, but surprisingly, it did.

So, you never know what might happen if you talk to the guy in a professional manner.

no, he tried first, then I tried. Both unsuccessful. Strange urethra... didn't work.

I agree. I like to do my job and move on to the next task. Could have been unintentional on this attending's part, but we all are responsible for our actions, whether intentional or not. A person can be a complete prick and have no idea, so it's just ok to deal with that? If it's directed at me, I don't accept it.
