Is It Just Me...

Is it just me or does it seem like there are many more people wanting to go into nursing now for all the "wrong" reasons? I feel like anymore everyone I hear wanting to go back to school for nursing just want to do it because they know they will have a job. I understand the economy is horrible right now, but I'm kind of getting irritating hearing all these people becoming nurses just because. Does anyone else feel this way?

Kinda...but majority of people do not make it through. We had 200+ people start nursing, we are down to 76.

So really, alot of people declare it under- estimating it....thinking its easy and they arre guaranteed a job.

NOPE!

it was a huge wake up call for me...but im one of the 76.

No..it's not just you. And everyone wants to go into NP school "right away" or become a CRNA "right away."

Everything is "RIGHT AWAY."

*sigh*

and what are the "right" reasons to go into nursing? Because I sure went into it for the "right" reasons, job stability and the flexability and the money. I also have been doing it for many years.

well maybe because you actually want to help someone not just because you get paid great and will have a job.

To the original poster, From what I have read there is not alot of places hireing nurses right now and all the ones that are hireing are looking for specific people alot of new grads have been out of school for months with no job yet, so for the people who are going into nursing just to have a job they still have to prove them selfs in school and even after that they will have to be patient for a job and if they truly go into nursing for the wrong reasons they most likly wont last.

I am one of those people who would like to become a CRNA right away, I want to do it because I like the idea of the career and the dutys, I wouldn't consider it a bad thing to have a dream to become a CRNA as soon as posible. :twocents:

I do agree with you on the fact that most people aren't hiring right now. All I was meaning was that many people I see who are going for nursing now as a second career only do it because they think it will be an easy way so to say to get a good job now and keep it.

A good salary and job security is actually very good reasons to choose a career. Just because you feel like you should "want to help someone" to choose nursing as a career does not mean that is everyone else's requirement to do so. FWIW, when I first went into nursing I was all gung ho about helping people, nursing is a calling, etc. too. Don't get me wrong, I still feel that way to some degree, but after almost twenty years, two kids and a mortgage I am more about the job security. I imagine that is foremost in the minds of many of these recent nursing school recruits. Who am I to judge why they should pursue this career....:twocents:

I'm with the last poster.. I love nursing and I like helping people but that's not why I chose nursing as a career.. i love the action in it.. handling meds, inserting IV's and Foley's, etc.. that is where my passion really kicks in..

Is it just me or do some people feel more entitled to the profession than others simply because they think they are in it for "the right reason"? I don't care WHAT the reason is, as long as they are a good nurse. :angryfire

BTW they aren't becoming nurses "just because." They need to put food on their tables and provide for their families (which is a great motivator to strive for excellence in our profession).

Ha ha, when I think about why I became a nurse all those years ago!! My boyfriend was always eyeing nurses up, one reason. I wanted him to notice me. Thankfully I am not with him now. The other reason being that I had a job as a waitress and decided that I loved working with people - Of course people in restaurants, having a nice night out are a lot different to people ill, on the worst day of their lives. Nursing school was tough - but I got through. I am definately unsure of what the 'right' reasons are to be a nurse. People who are in it because they care, soon become dissillusioned and either burn out or fall out. As for the rest of us, well I think being human brings a certain amount of empathy and love for our fellow humans - it's what stops us from killing each other - well most of us anyway!

Hi, Kbm. I admit it really irritates me that there is this notion that people should only go into nursing because they "want to help people". This is a naive concept to me. Nursing is a PROFESSION, not a VOLUNTEERING opportunity. We aren't all Florences. We have bills to pay and deserve to be paid for our backbreaking work. If you went into nursing with the main reason being to help others, that's nice, but you can't expect everyone to think that way.

Why the heck wouldn't people expect to get paid for services rendered? It is that kind of thinking that keeps nurses down and keeps them underpaid (so I disagree with your "get paid great" statement as well because if this industry were not made up by mainly females, I really think the pay would be MUCH better and much more appropriate for all that we are expected to do! I don't honestly believe most males feel obligated to help "just because" and suffer from martyr complexes. Seems to be a female concept. Part of what can make us great, but part of what hurts us financially, IMO. We nurses are supposed to get paid to do patient care because that's our job :twocents:).

I do understand you are probably saying that people should have an interest in helping others when choosing this profession, and really....if people can't stand helping others, they aren't going to make it through nursing school where they will be helping others for free (and paying with their own time and money to do it).

Do doctors have to want to help people as their primary reason for choosing to go into medicine? Not really. Again, anyone who goes into medicine or nursing who is adverse to helping people won't be happy in a profession that is so people-centered, but what if they want to go into that profession because they enjoy the technical aspect of it? The science of it? Or job stability and the neverending career paths one can take? Why is that not okay? Obviously I help people but to be honest, no, that was not my main reason for going into nursing and so what? I enjoy the technical end of nursing and the different careers and learning experiences it offers. As far as doing it for the money...nursing is not something that pays all that much for all that we do, anyway (esp. if you are in Florida like me! :jester:).
