Is Everybody Moving to California?

Just an observation but, it seems like there's a flood of posts lately from people inquiring about moving here.

Not too long ago the local news seemed to be filled with stories about people supposedly moving away because of the high cost of living, traffic etc. I guess that in reality, it doesn't always seem to be the case ... at least with RN's.

So what's up posters? What made you decide to check out and/or move to Cali?

Yeah, I guess you have to be there. Born and raised in SoCA, escaped a number of years ago. CA has its good points, but to imply that people aren't rude or that taxes aren't considered "high" is absurd.

I guarantee there are many nice areas throughout the country to live that don't include high crime, smog, traffic, taxes, & people living on top of each other. I love to go "home" to visit, but I hardly ever miss living there full-time.

I won't even think about leaving unless other states increase their pay and pass ratio laws ... which isn't likely to happen anytime soon.

1.The increase in pay from Illinois to California ($7/hour) will cover my rent for the month, so basically I will be living there for free.

2. I had three patients yesterday, I work in the ICU. This is a big motivator of why Im trying to get to California!

3. This winter it got to be 15 below zero, my 2006 car wouldnt start, my left knee pain felt great:angryfire. I promised myself that when it warmed up I wasnt going to forget that day and do everything I could to get to somewhere warm. Filled out 3 online applications for LA hospitals today............light a few candles for me

All states will have their share of rudeness and tax problems. Everyone that I know who moved from the East Coast to California loves it and said that the benefits of living in CA offsets the disadvantages.

It's interesting to read all of the comments here. I'm planning to move to CA is August for a New Grad RN Residency program. The job market is tough for new grads right now and these programs seem to be a great option.

Just wanted to add that a lot of people will always want to move to California. The weather, beaches etc I'm sure draw a lot of people from colder climates :)

And the crime, smog, crowded conditions/highway traffic, and the high cost of living will keep a lot from staying.

I just saw an article in the L.A. Times that mentioned that the population growth was slowing:

I don't like to "dis" the state where I was born and raised, but it's interesting that when we talk with people where we are now, there are many who did the California thing when they were younger and moved back home once they were ready to settle down and raise families.

I wish CA was the place it was when I was growing up; I miss it like mad. It really was a lovely place and I understand the attraction to "that" place. What it is now is kind of crazy....I enjoy going back for quick visits, but I'm always happy to come back where I am now....

The state's unemployment rate is nearing 11 percent, property values have plunged by 40 percent or more in some cities, and even many nurses are having difficulty finding work in some regions.

I was born and raised in California, but I won't be back anytime soon. The quality of life is actually amazing in other parts of the country.

I have lived in Cali my whole life... but as soon as I graduate in December I want to move away... hopefully to AZ so that I can still be relatively close to family in southern CA.

California has changed, even since I was a kiddo... I am 35. Southern CA just isn't what it used to be either... I figure I will leave and make room for someone who has always wanted to live here LOL!

Hey you guys are preaching to the wrong choir :) I could never live in CA and raise my children here..for varies reasons some that you guys mentioned. But I was just stating that CA will always be a hot spot to move..always..the perfect weather and beaches will always draw people from the midwest, northwest etc that are sick and tired of the winter...

I just got a job in northern LA, Im in the process of finding an apartment. I put my notice in last week.........I'll be honest, it is a tuff thing to walk away from a perfectly secure job to take on the unknown, but the salary is almost double and then there is the nice pt to nurse ratio Im looking forward too, I am going to miss chicago winters:dncgbby:

I was told that other states nurse to patient ratio is more in other states, that is why nurses love to work in California.
