Scenario: Bob applies for a job at a unit where his brother's fiance, Sue, is a staff nurse. Large unit of about 100 staff nurses so it is not likely that they will ever work together anyway. Both Bob and Sue will be staff nurses, no supervisory or management role. When the Bob's brother and Sue marry, will this be considered nepotism now that the bob and sue are sister-in-law and brother-in-law working on the same unit? Do you think this would be cause for not hiring Bob?
i don't see a problem. i've worked with my husband on the same unit in three hospitals. currently i work with one set of spouses, two sets of 20-somethings dating, a pair of gay men who are partners (although that isn't widely known), a set of sisters and twin brothers who you can only tell apart because their wedding rings are different. my husband works on another team but comes by to work with our patients regularly.
Not hiring somweone on that basis is discrimination. Their (potential) relationship with other staff in non-managerial positions has absolutely no bearing on their ability to carry out the job and even if they were siamese twins there is no way to suggest the fiancee is able to engender any favouratism in the hiring process.
If they are suggesting this then they are more saying that their managers are corrupt.

When i started my job my sister also worked on the same floor. She is an RN and I am an RPN so sometimes she was the charge on the same shift as me but it was no problem.
