Is this common? Would you take this position?

Was told I had a position. The new facility asked when I would be able to start. When I told them that I would start two weeks after receiving an offer letter, I was then told that they usually don't do offer letters and that I should just come in for the paper work. This is an RN position. Would you take this position without an offer letter? Thanks.

Did you need to be rude about it?

How was that rude?

I wouldn' take any job without pay rate, benefits, start date, shift, etc. in writing.

The poster referenced in JulesA's post doesn't consider him/herself to be in an occupation in which common courtesies like written confirmation of offers of employment, pay rates, etc. are extended ... but chastised the OP for asking about these.

Get the paperwork done and don't worry about a letter 'till you're on your way out the door from the paperwork day.

Sometimes testing is in the paperwork. I got offered a job on the phone then did the paperwork then got my confirmation letter (on the way now)

I would do whatever makes it easy on them and get your foot in that door to do the paperwork and secure that job ASAP or you may be looking 3-6 months for the next one.

I took the job and boy am I sorry!! Lesson learned will move on. My first paycheck, not only was my pay rate wrong, my hours were incorrect too. In addition I was told that the error will be fixed on my next check and that I should have the additional money added then. Not on your life am I going back to this place. I learned for next time to listen to that still little voice that is saying something is wrong and to get everything in writing beforehand.

I'm sorry to hear that it worked out like this and wish you well in future positions.

Sorry to hear how this turned out. Unfortunately, the same thing could have happened even with an offer letter. Hopefully your next position will go as hoped. Good luck.

I would not take it.

I once accepted a position that was picked from 3 offers.

I did not ask for a letter.

When I got there they paid less than agreed and "forgot" the benefits. The job was nightmare and the agency was in potentially enormous trouble with regulatory and fiscal agencies due to some knowledge deficits on the part of their administration and some poor choices. They did not tell the truth.

I have been on 1 job interview in my life that included the potential employer telling the truth.

Shame on me for not getting a letter.

When you come in to do your paper work, it will be official that you have a job. If you need any particular days off, HR will say you probably have to work that out wiht your new manager.

I got my offer letter the day I filled out my paper work!

I went through this just this month. I was interviewed, interviewed again, offered the job over the phone, sent releases off to check references and background check, after all that cleared HR told me to put my two weeks in. I then met with OT and Hospital nurse for drug test and physical. I then went into HR to fill out final paperwork accepting position, direct deposit and such. It was at this time a got a form with ID number, DON name, position and wage, which I was told when offered the job over the phone. The whole processess took 6 weeks from interview to hire date, which is Monday, but from the time HR told me to give my two weeks it was just a tad over two weeks until hire date. I don't find anything hokey about the process at all. And the previous poster was correct in stating that problems with hours and wage could have easily occured weather you had an offer letter or not.
