Is there anyone else like me? (studying after 10 years)

Published

ok here is (hopefully) the short version. I am a student grad of 1994 from a school of nursing here in Ohio. I wrote the nclex twice and failed both times. I stopped and became a stay at home mom. now 11 years later I have decided to take the boards again.

I called the ohio state boards of nursing and thank God there is no limit on years that you have to take the boards....whew! So I have been studying, and studying, and studying, and studying, and STUDYING!!!. I am so tired of studying. It is amazing how much I remember and yet how much I didnt' really learn.

I am using some nclex review books and the Springhouse Nclex review 3000 cd. I ordered the nclex flashcards that have the new format questions too.

and I have a couple questions.....

#1 Is there anyone out there that is or was in my situation?

#2 when taking the test online and such I am scoring anywhere from 74 to 85 % is that good? Does that really tell me anything?

#3 I am taking the sample test on http://www.rnboardreview.com the questions seem almost exactly what I have had on the nclex 3000 cd. Are these the same or taking from the same pool of questions? and are the actual test questions similar?

#4 has anyone had the same questions on the test seems like the actual questions they had on the boards?

Thanks ahead of time for your replys I know this is a great groups I have been reading some really great posts on here for the past 2 days!!

Hi Amy,

I'm sure you will get feedback from others that have been in your position, as well as study suggestions from those that were successful on the NCLEX in the recent past. You should know that the actual NCLEX-RN exam questions will be at a higher level than those on the NCLEX-3000 CD. This CD is great for reviewing/assessing your content knowledge, but the questions are more knowledge based than those you will encounter on NCLEX.

Many recent successful NCLEX test takers have high regard for the questions on the Saunder's Comprehensvie Review for NCLEX-RN CD. This textbook and the accompanying CD have been used by many successful NCLEX test takers.

Best of luck in your review.

Thanks Leda I have been hearing over and over again about Saunders so I guess I will have to check it out. what about sites on the internet? anything free compare to the actual test?

I found the kaplan review with test questions along with saunders prepared me the best for the boards. Do as many questions as you possibly can, but also study content. Memorizing really doesn't help on this test. You have to think critically and apply the knowledge to some situations. I commend you for trying again. If you need any further help, e-mail with specifics. Good Luck to you! Julie

Thanks Julie, I have been doing the nclex 3000 cd and the springhouse review flashcards that have a few "new format" questions. I am on my last area to review which is med surg. this and psych is the only areas I am even slightly worried about. if I miss a question I write the whole rationale out on a flashcard then I go to the net and look up the problem or disease and study further. I am really suprised at how much I have retained. I still write hubby notes with nursing short hand on them he just laughes. I am still feeling pretty confident even at this stage. I am just going to take it till I do pass and that is it!!! LOL

Hi AMY, I am also in the same situation as you do, I graduated 12 yrs ago in a foreign country. After i failed the US RN board the first time (1992), im very disappointed, luckily i passed the LPN board instead. Since then ive been working as an LPN. Just last year 2004 when i decided to take the RN board again after waiting 11 years. Im so scared that i will fail again, so i studied all the review books i can get. And also to help raise my confidence, i took the KAPLAN COURSE, which helped me a lot. The computer stopped at 75 questions and i got my result within 1 week....and guess what..I PASSED with flying colors. GOODLUCK to you..remember its not too late.( Have you attended a review class? I think it will help u a whole lot especially that u been out of school for long time.)

Hi Amy,

I just took the NCLEX in July & percentages from the nclex review books aren't always terribly accurate predictors. I know I took a Kaplan review course & worked a lot with their computer CD & that really did simulate pretty well the types of questions that I got on the real exam. I think just doing tons & tons of the questions & learning from the rationales will help. On the kaplan nclex CD I got roughly 60 & 70% on a lot of the practice tests, but so did my peers who were studying with me (& we studied a lot). We all 3 took the exam & passed in 75 questions, so I figure we did something right.

Good luck & study hard!

Hi Amy,

Just wondering if you passed the NCLEX? I too have decided to take the state boards after 2 previous failed attempts and a 5 year hiatus. I have the Saunders review book with 3500 sample questions and also the Princeton review book. I'm really nervous, but I think I can do it this time! Wish me luck

Hi huladoll76,

I've contacted Amy personally after reading her story on the forum. It was very inspiring to me to know that somebody else was in my situation and actually did pass the NCLEX. She passed last June '06!!!

In my case, it's been an 8 yr. "hiatus" on one failed attempt back in 2000. I'm currently preparing to take the NCLEX hopefully before this year is over. It's not easy but WE can do it!! I'm currently only using Saunder's Review 3rd ed. which was recommended by Suzanne4, one of the forum moderators. People claim her method has 100% NCLEX pass rate for repeat test takers and people who haven't tested in 20 years!! It's supposed to be that good. I think you can find a "sticky" at the top of the NCLEX discussion forum that outlines her 1st step.

Good Luck and Keep me posted!!

Thank you for replying Lvlytxn It's great to hear from others who are also in my situation. I just read Suzanne4's sticky and that sounds like a good place for me to start. I have the Saunders edition 2, but I think I will purchase the most recent edition since I believe my edition has the old style questions in it. Reading that others have passed the NCLEX after taking some time off has inspired me. YES, I do believe WE can do it! Thanks again for the info. Happy Studying :D
