I recently graduauted. I feel like I applied to about 8 or 9 hospitals ( 3 months ago) and have not heard from anyone. Even the hospital I work at now doesn't have a position for me. I didn't think it would be so hard to get a job. Any advice?

Oh my god. Don't give up. Keep looking. Are you an RN/LPN?

I hear ya on this one! Recent graduate also. I do have a position at the hospital I work at. But I applied to several others and nothing. But like someone had mentioned to me. Union (not sure if it only applies to them) hospitals have to advertise outside even though they are hiring from within. Not sure how that actually works.
But a funny one is that I applied for an RN position on line at a hospital in New Hampshire. I got a call last week from this hospital and they wanted to know if I was interested in a data processing position. Not sure how that came about--but I would like a nursing position please!

It is tough to get your first position. Are you willing to rotate skills and flexibile.
I hate to tell you even inhouse, you have to be persistant with nurse recruiter. I would call once a week and ask how your appiication is progressing.
You will be able to find a job at a chronic hospital such as Spaulding, Youville or New England Sinai.
Good Luck.
Thanks for the advice. I will be an RN hopefully by next Thursday after I take the boards. I've applied to so many places but have been reluctant to call on my apps. until I take the boards. I am flexible but would like to work evenings and maybe some 12 hour shifts. I figured employers would be looking to hire someone for those hours. Oh well-I'll keep trying. Thanks
Your post explained alot, unfortunately they won't look at your application until you have a RN. Once you pass, which I am sure you will, I would refax your resume, even though they ask you to submit online most end up in the trash ( insiders tip). Write a cover letter why you are interested in applying and what you can bring to the hospital. Don't give up! Alex

No, don't go to FL, you'll make 6-8 dollars less per hour and at that point over the course of your career, that cut doesn't make sense. I live in FL and when I get my RN will be moving back to NH to work in Boston.
I can't up and move to Florida because of my family. Besides, I like it here. It's really nice BUT really expensive. I will definately resend my stuff after I pass the boards. The first time I pretty much mailed everything on nice resume paper with a cover letter. I don't trust email applications.

Hospitals in the Boston area ARE hiring. Have you tried Brigham & Women's Hospital? MGH? Beth Israel? Check out hospitals websites. Keep your eyes open for hospital open house advertisement in newspapers or websites. Bring lots of copies of your resume and attend them! Don't give up! Hospitals are in need of nurses!!!
Good luck with the boards.
Yes that is very true--even though people are in house--staying on the recruiter is a must. I also learned that managers and recruiters have different agendas. I was offered the job by a manager--the nurse recruiter stepped in and everything got real crazy. She wanted me to take a different shift and had all the reasons why I should. But in the end the managers decision won. Thank God!!!!!
Most of the graduating class I was in started interviewing in January. Half of the evening program had jobs secured before taking the boards. Many of them are taking the boards next week and start work the following.
We were told in one our classes that we needed to get out there and market ourselves early.
I hope it works out for you.

I had the same problem, so I feel you pain. I graduated last June and was under the impression you had to pass the nclex to get a job. My school screwed up the apaperwork so I had to wait until Aug. By the time I received my scores it was Sept. I looked all fall for a postion, I bet I sent out over 30 resumes. I had 1 response from B&W in January. They were starting a OR orientation. However, in the beginning of Jan. I found a community health postion on the north shore in the globe. I ended up taking that postion, big mistake. Before accepting the psotion I was called for an interview at Emerson, they offered me a postion but wanted a 2yr commitment. I have since moved from the north shore postion to a private MD's office.
My advice keep sending the resumes. Attend all career fairs. Tell everyone you know you are looking for a job, try to network. People tell me the rest of the US is in desperate need for RNs, I did think about leaving the state.
