Hi all ---I've been lurking on this board for a few weeks now (lovely, huh?) LOL
Anyway --a little about me. I am 29 with 4 kids (ages 9, 7.5, almost 3, and 8 months), and will be starting to take classes this spring, so I can get on the waiting list for nursing school (2 year wait here).
When I was out of high school, I thought college was a waste of time, so I just worked, then met my dh and had a baby. The rest is history.
Being a SAHM for 9 years now, I know I want to have a career when my youngest is school age. I really want to be a nurse, but there are so many things I worry about! All the politics, etc. But I do like how there is room for advancement once you are an RN, if you decide to go back to school, if that's what one wants to do.
I'd love to be a labor and delivery nurse. Not sure why, but I just feel so called to that. Will I be able to choose what area I'd like to work in, once I am an RN?
I keep reading on this board because I want to be sure of something before I get into it. I'm glad you guys are a chatty bunch! LOL
Well, just wanted to introduce myself finally! I won't have much to contribute as I'm not in school yet, but I feel dumb lurking and not even saying hi!

Hi! Good luck. If after reading this board for two weeks you still want to be a nurse that's amazing. :)

TWEETY!
Don't ya all go scaring her off now!
The truth is, there are polotics, policies, protocol (lots of p's) in nursing, but there ar awesome rewards if we take the time to see them there (I am not referring to inept staffing though)

Hey, welcome. I have some advice:
If I were you, I would check with the university/college at which you plan to attend nursing school. Get a list of their pre-requisite courses (like English, Algebra, Speech, Biological Sciences, Chem, Microbio, etc.) and KNOCK THESE OUT FIRST.
When you have gotten your pre-req's done or you are pretty close, depending on the waiting list time at the nursing school, APPLY! If there is a 2 year or longer waiting list, (and there very well may be), start planning for it and apply early---- but keep working on the nursing support courses. It is vitally important you get as much pre-req work done BEFORE nursing school as you can, cause nursing school itself will keep you VERY busy, esp. as a mom of 4. Trust me!
I am one of the lucky ones who wound up in the area of her choice, OB/GYN, and almost 7 years later, no looking back, really. It's not easy, nursing school--- but then NEITHER IS NURSING. If you want it badly enough, you will achieve your dream of being an L and D nurse. I was hired directly in OB before I graduated college, so if I can do it; anyone else can.
If i can help you any way, please PM me.

Welcome Lori......we are so glad that you decided to lurk no more! Hope you decide to make us part of your "family" and call this home like so many of us do.
Read away, ask tons of questions and purservere(sp) in your dream to become a L&D nurse!!! We are here for you. (well, actually...you will have to depend on smiling for the L&D......it's like windows to me...I don't do it!! :roll )

My feeling exactly!
I wanted to say "hi, welcome" and check out the student nursing forum, tons of great info there. Also a great place to rant about the wait list etc. Lots of people doing prereqs there too.
Good Luck!
