Intraveneous Tubing changing. how often

Does anyone have any guidelines for how often I.V. tubing needs to be changed?

Gerneral rule of thumb is q 72; Note....general. Of course, facility guidelines over rule this.

Facilities have their own protocol or policy for changing IV tubing. Usually it is dependent on CDC guidelines. Their latest recommendation is 96 hours.

We just changed to the Q 96 hour deal.

Intralipids are changed daily - both the bag and the tubing.

Any other tubing is good for 96 hours. If an IV bag is a "stock" bag (like 0.9% normal saline with 2 units heaprin/cc) we also leave that up for four days if spiked with brand-new tubing. Any other bag that the pharmacy has made or added things to has to be changed daily.

We change our HAL qd and regular IVF q72hrs, AL/UAC q72hrs, gtts...it varies.

we change our TPN Q 24 hours and our Intralipids 20% Q 12 hours. with or without additives, the bag has to be changed Q 24 hours; but, the tubings can be changed Q 72 hours only if the IV solution is plain D10%, D5%, NSS.

Our TPN/ IVF tibing is q72 hours, our lipids are q24 and most of our med tubing is q 72, bgut our PGE's are 48, milrinone q48. pretty much whenever a new syringe or new bag has to be hung, the tubing goes with.

D10% or less (or NS only) is Q72hrs. Fluids with dextrose concentrations higher than 10% and TPN are Q24hrs. Gtts are usually Q72hrs, depending what the carrier fluid is. Tubings expire on the same timetable, so they are changed with IV fluid bags.

Dextrose and water soln and 1/4ns with heparin art soln are q48. Everything else is q24--fluids and tubing.
