The nurse wants a US SSN#. The only way to get one is to be physically in the US with a document that will legally permit you to work.

All you need to do is present a copy of the Visa Screen Certificate and a valid job offer and you are all set to get the TN Visa. Once you are in the US, just go to the SSA office and apply, usually takes about ten days to get the SSN#. Then submit that to NV, and presto, a license.

Hi! Just want to confirm that if I do pass the NCLEX (im planning to apply in CA or VT), I will still not get a license because I have no SSN, unless I have an employer and already staying in the US? I've heard that CA doesn't issue a license w/o a SSN but how about Vermont?

Your answers will be highly appreciated! Thank you very much!

Makes no difference you will not get a SSN until you are in the US and can prove you are legally there, for immigration purposes you will receive a letter if not the license stating you meet requirements and that will meet immigration, you will also need visa screen certificate which proves everything for immigration

so that means I will only get my license if I'm in the US. And that applies to all states?

No Some states will issue a license without SSN

No Some states will issue a license without SSN

Would that include Vermont? I've already asked them thru email but no response yet.

I am a very frustrated Canadian RN who has passed the NCLEX, and has received Visascreen Certification from the CGFNS, and holds a RN License with the State of Minnesota. I would like to endorse my Minnesota License to Florida, but am a little confused as to how I can obtain my Florida License without a Social Security number (As I have never worked in the US).

In order to obtain a TN Visa (to show at the Social Security office) which I qualify for, I need a job (either through hospital or travel nurse agency). In order to get a job I need a license for the state I would like to work in (Florida). And I can not obtain a Florida License without a SSN. So I am really not sure what the process will be? It is a catch 22 and can not understand how I can complete this process! I would appreciate any assistance in this matter.

You should have received a letter saying you meet state requirements. Hospitals do offer jobs without the nurse having a SSN, All you need is a letter from them offering you a job plus vsc. Please read Suzanne's post on this number 14. Otherwise foreign nurses would not be getting jobs as they can not get SSN until in the US with a valid visa and they have no problems going through the process.

Hope this helps and good luck

I'm from the Philippines. If ever I'm with a tourist visa can I apply for a SS number? I already have a Job offer from one of the hospitals in CA, a letter saying I met state requirements, and a visascreen certificate. What else do I need? Thanks guys.

No you can not apply for a SSN with a tourist visa, you need a valid work visa for SSN

Thanks Silverdgragon. But is there an easier way around this? Like an exception or something. I really needed to have my SSN before my application will expire within 3 years.
