Hi Kabin,

I now about that web side but I have a 'Catch22' situation created where the Social Security Administration could not issue the SSN because I do not have a license. On the other side, Nevada Board of Nursing could not issue me a license until I get a SSN.I have spoken with one agent from a travel agency;she was aware of the situation but was not able to help me. I have no clue how to solve this problem and I am very frustated.I will be so thenkful to everyone who can help me in solving this situation.

Thanks

Are you actually in the US yet. I am sure you will not get a SSN issued until you are actually in the US but the BON should give you a letter stating you meet requirements. Check out Suzanne moderator in the international forum

Hello all

just wanted to say i have ran into the exact same problem trying to nurse in Nevada and by talking to the Nevada state nursing boards they can't see a problem with us canadians getting a SS# and the social security people say we can get it if we are eligable it is the worst road block so far that i have come into ...if anyone gets a way around it please let me know and i will do the same!

thanks

US is getting very stric on issuing SSN to foreign nationals.

You can try, some states do not need a SSN to issue license.

Or if you prove you have a job offer, it might be easier to get a SSN.

The problem with that is now for a Nevada temporary license you still need a SS# in which you can not apply for endorsement so unless you are willing to work in one of those states that does not require a SS# right off the bat then you can obtain a number after working for a month or so unfortunately that is something that i am not too keen on doing i am trying to get to Nevada to be with my boyfriend so hence if that is the only option i will suck it up and do it

I moved to the US 7 years ago so this may not be up to date.

I received a letter from my prospective employer saying they had a position for me, and a letter from the BON saying I met their requirements for licensure. I packed up and moved. Once I crossed the border and got my VISA I had to go to the SSN office to get a number. I sent a copy of my SSN to the BON and they took about 2 weeks to complete their paperwork and clear me to practice. The wait from the BON was a surprise as I had not budgeted for 2 weeks without work, so be aware.

The customs and immigration people were very helpful with questions and I called the border crossing I planned to use numerous times. I was able to get all my paperwork in order before arriving, including importing my car. The actual time spent at the border was about 30-45 minutes, mostly because they ahd so many forms to fill out. Much easier than expected.

i could not get my ss# until i was in the usa and had proof of my visa screen in passport. thankfully i went through mn to get my license as they gave me a hard copy of it which i was able to endorse to tx. i do know though that you need to be a legal resident in the usa to get one and at the social security office its a rather intimidating and long process of verifying documents.

When I got my childrens social security number I had to send a copy of their birth certificate. I am pretty sure you have to be a u.s citizen to get a ss # or some legal document that allows you to work in this country.

I understand your frustration. I am Canadian but went to school in the US so things were a little easier for me but not much. Nobody from my school warned me about this. I was just about finished my LPN when I found out that I couldn't get a licence without a SSN. And my intention was to get my RN all along I just found it faster to take the LPN year first and then bridge into a RN program. After a lot of digging I found out you can apply for OPT which is practical training work visa for students who have graduated from nursing school. This gave me work authorization status which allowed me to get the SSN and then accept employment for a set number of months. The frustrating part for me was that I couldn't continue on with schooling until I had a licence and until you get the SSN you can't get a licence. A vicious circle. Things are so much different since 911. Apparently they used to give out SSN's easily but that is not the case anymore. I think your best bet is getting a licence in a state that doesn't require the SSN for licensure and then endorsing into Nevada. It is probably not super fast though. I just endorsed into Arizona due to a new job and it took at least 6-8 weeks but they allow you to get a temporary licence in 48 hours if you have a letter stating you are starting your job within 7 days. Ask a lot of questions from different sources. That is really helped me along my journey thus far. It is possible...
