NCLEX...how was it
For me it was the hardest test that I have ever taken. I left not knowing one way or another as to if I passed. I struggled with the different drug names just little stuff that could all add up to a big fat F

"No Diversion" policy
OH WOW, I couldn't imagine my hospital not being able to go on diversion. We are the only level one trauma center in my city and at times everyone is in resess and theres about 3 nurses for 35 Pt's which is not very safe. I think that is a recipe for a disaster.

Nursing and unionization...
I have worked in both unionized hospitals and non-unionized hospitals. I can tell you this when i was working in a non union hospital I truly missed my union. Unsafe working conditions, not getting breaks and being told I do not necessarily need one or being told that no matter what I must stay once my shift is done is utter crap. I like the security of having someone (or a group of someones) back me up if there ever came a need. I like having base wage's set out a head of time so that i know what I am worth to all hospitals not just one. I know many American's are very anti union and maybe thats a result of past experiences. The union I belong to is run solely by nurses that were voted in by nurses. If we are unhappy with what what is happening in the union at the next vote in then those rotten apples can be booted out. No matter what a union is only as strong as those that support it. A single person is rarely ever able to make a stand/statement however thousands can.

nursing school while pregnant?
I had one of my children during my nursing program and in a word or two it can be real hell depending on your program and instructors. Having a child is hard having one during what some may say are the hardest and most hellish times can be even harder. I did it but would I do it again, not really sure. I gave up tons in order to finish my education sometimes i think that what I lost was not worth what I gained. I am done now and I am working as a nurse. I am happy that I will have a job for as long as I can and that i will be able to give my kids the kind of life that I want them to have. I'd think real hard on your decision no matter what it will not be an easy one. Dani P.S. I had my child in my first year, however a lot of girls that had children in my program got prego in there last year and it was easier on them as most generally had there children once they were out of school.

After reading negative thread, want to give up nursing dream!
i am a newer nurse and i can say that i have experienced a lot of negativity and crap that goes along with my job. but honestly i can say that when a pt or their family thanks me for the job well done, or even smiles at me and acknowledges the job that i have done its all worth it to me. nursing is hard we see the best life has to offer and the worst, learn to look for the small little joys and forget the rest. in the end i think its worth it even though i sometimes come home cursing and angry those feelings fade and i go back to work with a smile one my face and wait to see what i'm gonna learn new each day. i love my job and wouldn't trade it for the world.

Which Provinces not Requiring BSN/BScN?
Here in MB you can still get the diploma nurses course. It's only offered at one place (Red River College) and there are tons on the waiting list to get in, I think its over 3 years now.

grad nurse and nclex
bon is bord of nursing .. basically the state are you trying to get a license in.

grad nurse and nclex
hey there, i just did all this stuff last may so hopefully i'll b e able to answer some of your questions. yes you can write the nclex before you licensed or passed the crne in canada. all you have to do is chose what state you want (and i will say minnesota is really quick and you'll have your license with in a week - after you pass the nclex and they give you a hard copy of the license which most states wont do with out a ss#). once your state is chosen get the paper work from them that is needed which you can get on line. for me i needed my school to fill out the form regarding education what program i was in credits etc. the school sends this to the state bord. you also need your provincial bord to send in a form regarding your gn license. once they get it and everything is fine they will let you sit for the nclex (which you have to apply for and pay for) take the test and then wait to see if you passed the test. i was licensed in the states before i was up here in canada. now for the cgfns i started that process at the same as i started the whole licensing thing. if your really interested don't wait just start it cause it takes soooooooooooooo long to complete it. when you go to your school with the paper work theres a form for the ces and you can get your school to fill that one out to. with cgfns don't wait for anything just start the process and gt the ball rolling. even if you don't have everything just start it cause eventually it will all fall into place. i am glad i did it and now my visa screen is good for 5 years so i have it if i ever want to go down there and work again. hope this helped answer some of your questions. if you have any more questions i'm me. dani

HELLO TEXAS, canadian lpn looking for info
Hey there, I'm not sure how you'd go about working down in TX as a LPN. Nurses from Canada have to have a RN in order to get a work visa and to get the work visa you have to jump through a lot of hoops with a ton of paperwork. now I know things may be different if your married to an American, that being said either way its a long process.

The Methodist Hospital
I loved working at TMH in TMC however as tym21 said the families and Pt's were very spoiled. Maybe it was the unit that I worked on, but honestly there were many times where I felt more like a paid servant then an educated woman. The people that I worked with (fellow nurses) were great, however it would have also been great for management (DON) to stand up more for her nurses rather then treat us like door mats. on a side note they also offered a ton of bonus's and events to help improve staff's happiness.

Social Security number
i could not get my ss# until i was in the usa and had proof of my visa screen in passport. thankfully i went through mn to get my license as they gave me a hard copy of it which i was able to endorse to tx. i do know though that you need to be a legal resident in the usa to get one and at the social security office its a rather intimidating and long process of verifying documents.
