I heard on the news this morning that the Triboro Bridge was shut down because of a woman giving birth on the bridge. Made me wonder--what are some of the most interesting places you've heard of or dealt with where women have given birth?

A midwife I know has 11 kids and she has gone in her bathroom and gotten in the bathtub with some of them and delivered with no assistance. Seems kind of strange to me, because my husband and I both freak out when it comes "time" and we would collapse to think of going it alone. But it's no big deal to her. I'm just glad nothing has gone wrong.

a former L&D coworker of mine had a similar but different story- with baby #2 (about 20 years ago, I think) she had ONE contraction and felt the urge to push. So she got into the empty tub so she wouldn't make a mess, yelled at her DH to call 911 and grab some towels (then yelled at him to get the OLD towels when he brought her the pretty new ones!). She had been in L&D for a few years already, so she said she was a lot calmer than he was. Got a nice ambulance ride to the unit she worked on cuddling her brand new baby girl in her arms. It was a cute story, she told it better than I can, lol.

I took care of a term baby in the NICU a while back who was born in the front seat of mom & dad's car on the way to the hospital, just a few minutes down the road. Beautiful baby, she was just in such a rush to meet everyone that she just couldn't wait to be born but apparently, in her excitement over her very first car ride, forgot about that whole breathing thing for a few minutes ;) (She did well once she stabilized and went home happy & healthy about a week later)

My brother-in-law was born in the elevator at the hospital. They were sending my mother-in-law home for "false labor." The resident was in the elevator with her and she kept telling him that the baby was coming and he didn't believe her. Mom-in-law said it about scared the bejeebees out of the resident when she delivered. She had a very quick birth with my husband (the older brother), and barely made it to the hospital on time.

One of my friends was preggers with #6 and had decided on a water birth with a midwife. Started labor, called the midwife, took a shower prior to getting in the hot tub and delivered #6 in the shower . . . . she just sorta slid out.

Our hospital is adjacent to a riverbed (mostly dry as we are in SoCal!) where there are a lot of homeless. We have occaisional babies born there and brought in.

Two babies were born in cars on I-5 in traffic jams in Seattle area this week. I forsee this getting more frequent as the traffic keeps getting worse all the time.

In February of 2002 I was a patient in Parkland's ER having problems with my shunt. My wife and my inlaws and some of my coworkers were all in my little exam room when we heard all kinds of commotion across the hall. Turns out a lady was giving birth in the bathroom...felt like she had to "go" and delivered an 8 pound baby girl.

And no, apparently this woman (who was rather large) had absolutely no idea she was pregnant. All you could hear was screaming "BABY!!! A BABY!!!" And some assorted expletives...

At least she was in the right place...

I almost had my second son in the toliet in L&D.

My friend had her baby in the lobby of the hospital. She was trying her hardest to get to L&D, but her baby girl wasn't going to let that happen.

I had a friend with fast labors. The first was born in the elevator, the second in the ER, the third while she was brushing her teeth!!!!, and the next two in the bathtub as that was the easiest to clean.

I've delivered several babies (other people's, not mine) in the back seat of cars. They seem to think they can lie down in the back seat and be more comfortable. Trouble is, most were 2 door cars and there's no way to get them out in a hurry. The upholstry is just never the same!!
