being induced

i am due in 2 days, but i think i will go over.my baby is posterior and i have heard posterior babies tend to be 'late'. my other children were anterior and born 2-3 weeks early. If you are induced is labour more painful as people who told me they have been induced said its bad. im expecting a painful labour anyway cos of the position baby is in but hope it will turn with the contractions. Any advice appreciated. Thanks. :)

Stay out of bed as much as possible. Stand at the bedside and lean over the bed so maybe the baby will be encourage to turn. Walk, walk, walk......

I have been induced twice and yes it does hurt more than if your body is naturally inducing the contractions. make sure that you ask for pain medication if you need it. be prepared for a c-section if it comes to that. Post above had good ideas but just make sure your prepare your mind and talk to your dr. about your ? and fears Good luck and keep us posted.

GIRL! If at all possible, you want to go into labor the "natural" way! "Normal" contractions are not exactly loadsd of fun, but the pitocin-induced ones feel like evil aliens have taken over and are wracking your body! Seriously, three STRONG contractions in a row with NO BREAK between each contraction and only about a 30 second break between sets of three is NOT NORMAL!

Anyway, if ya have to be induced, never fear - epidurals are magical.

Just because your baby is OP does not indicate that you will go over your due date. Your community midwife should be able to give you a membrane sweep when you are about a week late, and she will be able to tell you at that time what condition your cervix is in, ie is it ready for labour. I doubt unless you have a reason for induction whether you will be induced before being 10 days late, some trusts will leave woman up to 14 days before intervening. It is much better for you to go into labour naturally. If you are induced there is a slight increased risk of things going on to C/S.

If and when you are induced, if the midwife can rupture your membranes then they will probably go this way first. Lots of women in Uk now have OP babies prior to labour and the majority will go on to deliever OA. When babies are in the OP position prior to Labour they tend to take longer than OA babies, and this may cause more discomfort and you tend to have a lot of back ache.

I had an OP presentation, I was induced and the whole labour took 2 hr 55 mins, and was just as painful as my previous baby which was an OA presentation.

You are a multip and have had two previous pregnancies and deliveries so the odds are for normal natrual childbirth.

There is research to suggest that you can do certain exercises which will help to change the positions and I know some classic ones for breech presentation, which would make you laugh. it is felt though that the results are debatable.

Do lots of walking especially inclines, have lots of 'sex' I know it is an old wives tale but there is definatly something in it.

It is normal for you to be anxious re the pain thing-I never did it well but I am great with labourers, and am always impressed with how many woman only use Gas & Air.

Leaving a women to go into labor on her own is a good thing - if it seems as though that may happen. Keep in mind the longer the women is overdue, there are just as many risks as if you were to induce. Overdue neonates lose weight, and there is a risk of aspiration if there is meconium. Sex will help because it is said to loosen the walls of the cervix. Also, being on your hands and knees and rocking back and forth may help to reposition baby to an anterior position - and if the baby is anterior, the labor *should* go a lot better. Natural is always best...but...like other posts, ask your doctor about anything you may be confused about =) Congrats and good luck!

You should not allow a woman to have more than 4-5 contractions in 10mins. If this happens you must switch off the infusion asap. It is very dangerous to allow the uterus to go hypertonic.

In UK very rarely during induction do we go straight to infusion, we normally use pesseries or a gel.

Kay I would agree, I think sometimes we have to remember that despite a common language practise in the States and the UK is very different in some situations.

Oh one thing though you mentioned lots of sex and it being an old wives tale semen actually has some prostaglandins and we use the synthetic form in gel and pessaries to ripen the cervix, so why shouldn't the natural form work as well.

Pessaries or gel are very appropriate for NON-effaced, unripe cervices. But don't forget, these have their dangers too. You can't stop gels once they start....and ... Sure, You can remove a pessary or tampon. But you cannot "turn off" the hormonal effects, and Terbutaline can only go so far. They are NOT to be mistaken for "safer" interventions, to my thinking. All require skilled clinicians monitoring closely their effects, and knowing what to do when trouble arises.

Oh, by the way, Prostin gel, which is BIG BUCKS here in the USA, has been derived from none other than PIG semen.

So yes, trying sex first, if not contraindicated, is a good thing. So is nipple stimulation. There are natural ways to try and get things going, for sure! Just be sure they are not contraindicated in your case.
