Here's a new sticky for students involved in online/distance BSN programs through Indiana State University. Enjoy!
When I went to school to become an LPN our IV therapy class was very basic. We practiced on a dummy arm but were not allowed to practice on each other. My real IV experience came from working. There is really nothing like the real thing and practice, practice, practice. With ISU you do have real clinical experience, IV insertion is something that your preceptor can work on with you. Watch the reivew in the LPN to RN transition course and then let your preceptor know that IV insertion is something you want to work on.
Chaxanmom-Were you ever planning to take 450 in the summer '09? I am receiving an answer of "most likely" as to whether it will be offered and that is jut not good enough. I either need to take it now in the spring or get a definate answer that it will be offered in the summer. A "maybe" leaves me with the possiblity of not graduating this fall.

I was never planning on taking it in the summer. I have a summer internship at NIH I'm doing this summer. I originally planned on taking it last semester and graduating this spring but didn't realize I needed 324 first (rather than at the same time) so now it's 450 and 424 (and Comm 101...ugh) now and the rest of the 400 levels this fall.
Is it too late for you to get in 450 if you need to? I would email Jeanine O. and tell her you really need to know for sure so it doesn't mess up your grad plans. Did you submit your graduation application yet? I did that as soon as I was one year out. Like first of December I think.
Ditto on the IV stuff. Like other skills you have to learn for your RN, it's sooo much better with a one-on-one preceptor than in a pile of clinical students. Private lessons in nursing are awesome! I watched a lot of YouTube videos beforehand too. On my first one my preceptor said my technique was "perfect" and she could have made a training video with that stick.
I was floatin' on a cloud! lol! I got a set of critical care nursing skills DVDs from half.com the other day to watch (a lot!). There's no way I'm going to a Hopkins ICU in a couple of weeks and looking stupid and bumbling. Nuh uh. No way. I got a book on hemodynamic monitoring and the Shade ECG book too! lol! (We need an emoticon of a nurse with a pocket protector and big ol buck teeth so she can be our nursing nerd. lol!)
I am going totally thru thr ISU RN-BSN program.I will not try to test out-just keep on keeping on.This on-line stuff is new to me but I hope after this semester(NURS 300 and 304) I will have it down.My friend is preceting me for NURS 304 so that is good-we work together and have downtime some eveniongs so we can work on the checkoffs. Best of luck and luv to all

In my opinion on paper ISU is a great way to go. I know I tried it., I had NO drive to complete the program, it was had to do the math protion and I got stuck there and wasnt able to move. So Opted to finish elsewhere. My hat off to those who are so far into and are almost done. Wish I could have done it. I think some people can really do it ans some people just can't.Totaolly worth the invcestment if you can really stick to it. GOOD luck!!!!!!!!!!1
Yes I'm going to graduation. I'm so glad to hear you are too! I checked the rosters and saw you are in 424 with me. Yea!! :yeah:I'm taking both 424 and 450. OMGosh...450 scares me. 3 papers, a teaching presentation plus all the regular classwork. Oh and an ATI. 424 has an EBP paper (doing mine on the Surviving Sepsis Campaign...already started mine!) plus ATI plus classwork. Arghhh! Oh and for 450 you need a 94% to get an A. Oy vey! I was planning on concentrating mostly on 424 since I want to do critical care but it looks like 450 is going to demand a LOT of time.I'm taking Comm 101 through Ivy Tech as well this semester but it sounds like it might be fun. It's only 100 level so they can't demand toooo too much I would think.
The 180 clinical hours are going to make it hard. I'm doing 2 days a week at NIH for 450 clinicals and then one 12-hour shift a week at Hopkins for 424. Haven't figured out yet when I'm going to do classwork, study and do all these papers! Oh well, it will make the semester go fast for sure!! lol!
I just took COMM 101 at IVY Tech this past fall. It was fairly easy. However, just make sure if you're using Google video to start uploading it several days in advance because half the time google video didn't work right. I think out of 5 speeches, only 1 was uploaded properly and on time. Luckily, they were fairly nice about this since it was the first semester they used Google. :)

Did you have to have four audience members for yours?? How does she check that exactly? Do they have to be in the video too or sign something or what? That audience thing is a PITB!
i also took that class in the fall at ivy tech. 5 speeches; i had an audience of 4 for 3 speeches and no audience for 2 of them. still got an a.
i need to take the teas exam. any suggestions? should i try and get some study material or just wing it? all of my pre req have been taken in the last few years.
thanks, brenda
Is 106 the Mental Health test out? If so, then yes, I used the CSM material and did fine...study the material and study the practice exam...I think quite a few questions were the same. I have applied for a fall '09 graduation....I am taking 14 credit hours this semester and have 180 hours of clinical to complete but I am so ready to be done:D

Nope. There's a little video course you watch during the Transition LPN to BSN class. I practiced on a fake arm with my preceptor a few times then did my first live stick on a patient.
It was a breeze though. IVs are fun! Just have your preceptor work with you. I practiced some additional sticks on my preceptor too.
