Im trying to write a paper about issues in the workplace and "bullying" seems a great topic to work on. The only problem is...how can we fix this problem? As a professional...we need to act as one...this will be difficult to solve...any suggestions?

Bullying is such an accepted part of many workplace cultures, so the simple solution is to make it an unacceptable part of our working lives. Unfortunately, we cannot use simple solutions to solve complex problems.

Bullying in the workplace often comes from people in high positions, then filters down, creating a very toxic work environment. Attitudes reflect leadership.
Also, a very Unprofessional work place, specially if done in front of other employees or worse yet...patients. Any form of bullying is wrong, no matter who it comes from, and work places should have a Zero Tolerance policy for it.

There's actually been a ton of research done on solving this problem. Try looking under "horizontal violence" for some studies. Confronting the bully head on has been shown to be wildly successful.

If you do a literature search on the topic, you'll find tons of stuff. As TheCommuter said above, it is a very complex problem and will require multiple interventions.

I've been bullied by the girl behind the counter at McDonald's.
So much for this theory.

, uh sorry Flying ICU RN. I understand that this can be very demoralizing as all you wanted was a cheeseburger without catsup.
I've never quite recovered.

That's when you call **911**, duh . . . Kidding!! :chair: ahem. . .
I think bullying in the workplace is like world peace "let it begin with me" corny as that sounds because even if you could wave a wand and get rid of overt bullying behaviors it's not going to be replaced with nurturing behaviors. Whatever internal forces cause people to do what they do in the open they'll figure out a way to do in the shadows.
Weaker people mimic the behavior of stronger people, too. It's amazing how quickly a horrible unit can change with a leader who doesn't accept that crap even if there are no replacements in the staff itself.
