Hi FutureRN, first don't base your capabilities on what someone else has or has not accomplished. If you want to do nursing badly enough, you will do what it takes to accomplish it. You can do it and you will find a way to make it work! Good luck! :D

What steps have you taken towards reaching your goal?

What steps have you taken towards reaching your goal?

I started school last year in Jan 07 to finish my pre-reqs so that I could apply to nursing school in Fall 08. I am now taking A & P 1 and II this summer and will be starting nursing school in the Fall. I was a little unsure of my capabilities at first -- I am much older than you. I thought "oh I'm too old to start a new career", but here I am ready to start nursing school in the fall. I just kept putting one foot in front of the other and concentrating on my ultimate goal. I got in with a GPA of 3.2, which I wasn't sure if I would make the cut or not. It had been a long time since I had been in school. The semester before me everyone had much higher GPA's.

Don't give up your dream. If you want it, pursue it. One foot in front of the other! Good luck! :yeah:

Do you mind going to NJ? School of Allied Health has a LPN program there.

While I understand you have an 8 month old to support, you need to slow down your train of thought here. You are only 21 yrs old. Have you taken any pre-req's yet? If not, start them, slowly, and do as well as you possibly can in them. If you rush your pre-req's, especially with the baby, you will not do well. I know, everyone is in a hurry to get in and out of school, but the reality is, would you rather do it in 3-4 yrs part time and do well, or do it in 3-4 yrs because you didn't do well enough to get into a program (or, God forbid) failed a class?

I have a 16 month old and I feel the same way as you, but I realized my mistake, I been just getting by in school with B's and C's in my pre-reqs and that wasnt cutting it. Aim to get mostly A's and B's. My 2.7 GPA haven't gotten me no where. I'm now taking classes over to improve my grades. Like they said one foot in front of the other. I didn't study like i was suppose to and i was working full-time. Those are 2 no-no's when trying to get into a nursing program. I applied to Saint Vincent's Catholic Medical Center in Queens for Fall 2009 and hopefully they will accept me, if not then I just have to keep trying. Dont give up, and please dont settle for a career that won't make you 100% happy.

I spoke with the admissions adviser yesterday at my school. She said they have plenty of seats open for January. Its also 1st come 1st serve. If you recieve a C or lower in A&P, you can take Excelsior challenge test, any passing grade and they will accept. There are many BMCC former students there.

My only recommendation is that your work schedule had a impact that didn't allow you to get good grades. When you get into the Nursing program, make changes before you start. Nursing school is 10 times harder and there is no forgiveness. Don't give up

tabrown 1, what school is this?

I'm assuming you are talking about Cochran tabrown. According to the site, you must have a lab component with the exam. Is that so? I guess this school won't fit me because it's 2 years. They don't seem to knock off much for being a LPN.

I applied to a lot of nursing programs, both private and city schools in NY and I'm sorry to say that you won't really find one that isn't competitive to get into. The schools, especially the two year programs usually only have about 80 or 90 seats because of lack of professors and then 300 students applying for those seats. Some of them you can get into with a 3.2 (the lowest) but all of them require pre-nursing exams which are compared with your pre-req grades.

I know exactly how you feel. two years ago I was at BMCC as well, and when it came time to apply to the nursing program they turned me down because my gpa was a 3.0. I was devastated and angry. I had no idea about their gpa requirements. So I started looking for other schools and a friend suggested Cochran school of nursing in Yonkers. I went online and applied, I found out I needed to take nutrition, biology and developmental psych. I took those classes except nutrition at BMCC and made sured I got good grades. I was lucky enough and got accepted at Cochran, in my first semester I was able to take nutrition at Mercy college along with my first nursing course. The nursing program was a challenged but I was commited to doing my best and passing all my classes and I did. I just graduated with honors, something that I would have never thought would happen. I love the school, they really prepare you for what you will encounter out there. In a way I am glad that BMCC did not accept me because I feel that attending Cochran was the best thing that could have happened to me. I just passed my NCLEX on my first try, I had only 75 questions, which is the least you can have on the exam. I took the Kaplan review course which really helped.

Cochran is a private school and with that comes a higher tuition price, but it is all worth it. I suggest you look into it and don't wait to apply, I know a lot of people try to get in the program so the sooner you apply the better. Let me know if I can be of any help..

Good luck with everything and don't get discouraged!!!!!!:)
