Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Hi everyone Im new here at allnurses.com and I am a new LPN. I want every nurse to be proud whether they are RN or LPN. I have noticed over the past few months when I tell people that I am a LPN they always say "Arent they phasing LPN's out". I think a lot of people are unimformed and dont realize that LPN's are nurses too. I love all nurses , but I want people to know all over the world that I am proud to be a LPN ! I have started a Facebook page!

Same here. When I tell someone that I am an LPN. They make a remark saying" LPN's are being phased out". I have to do a come back and say no they are not, there are jobs out there for LPN's too. I hate being belitted just because I am an LPN and not an RN. We are all nurses and I AM PROUD TO BE AND LPN!!:rckn:

This thread is great, I'm sick of defending my decision to go to LPN school. I'll still be a nurse, won't I? I have worked with amazing LPN's and use them as inspiration, no one is less of a nurse because they aren't an RN. The N in LPN does stand for nurse, doesn't it?

LVN/LPN/RN WE ARE ALL NURSES!!!! The scope of practice varies by state and in CA there are few differences between LVNs and RNs. Of course most RNs would beg to differ and would argue as to why there's a major significance. As long as we're IV Certified in CA we're allowed to touch the IVs (with some limitations). Staffing ratios, we're included in them by the hospitals as to licensed nurses on the floor even though most LVN's don't carry a full load like the RNs. We're not allowed to make an initial assessment but we can do the assessments (data collection) after the RN makes the initial assessment. We're allowed to do dressing changes, pass all medications except where an IV push is required. What we CAN'T do are IV push, TPNs, draw from the picc line, care plans (which we did in LVN school BTW), and also an initial assessment (as stated before). The difference in education isn't that much unless you hold a BSN or MSN where the education is greater. But clinically it's almost the same except the above mentioned. I'm proud to be a LVN. I'm also IV Certified, and I also hold a BA :yeah:in a non nursing field. So I would consider myself educated. But there's still so much to learn once I receive my RN as there are other things that I can't do as a LVN, that I would be able to once I get my RN.

Main point, LVN & LPN no matter what WE'RE ALL NURSES!!!!!! I really hate all this whole "oh you're almost a nurse" and I correct them "I'm already a nurse". So everyone be proud of who you are, we're all nurses and LVN/LPN/RN we really all should unite because in the end it's the patient that we're caring for not ourselves and our titles!

I for one am proud of being an LPN. I worked hard to get where I am and work hard at what I do. The whole LPN vs. RN thing is very annoying, but I have to remind myself that the people that think we are not nurses or "real" nurses are very uneducated on the subject. #1 that tells me they don't even know what LPN stands for being that the N definately means Nurse. We are licensed by our board of nursing as nurses. We have the option to become RNs if we want but it's not mandatory and not everyone wants to become one anyway. This crock that LPNs are being phased out is not even true because if it were then they would phase out LPN programs altogether. There are some businesses that do not hire LPNs but that's on a specific basis. There's nothing wrong with staying an LPN if that's what the person wants. We shouldn't be made to feel like we have to go back to school. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with it because if that is what they want they should pursue. It should be a personal decision though. I myself will be going back but it's because I want to not because I have to. It was my original goal but I'm glad I chose this route, it was the best for me. I just think we should remember that we are a team working for the improvement of the patient. We all do our part no matter the title. Half of our patients don't know the difference anyway because at the end of the day all they know is that we are their nurse and we're taking care of them. That's what's important. Just my :twocents:

Yeah! Fellow LVN here!! I did it as a stepping stone for my RN, but I definitely have to say that my initial perception of LVNs has changed. I was part of the uninformed public, and thought LVNs were pointless. Defending yourself as a LVN..especially as a male..DEFINITELY gets annoying. It's definitely been character-building. When I'm a RN, I'll definitely give LVNs the utmost respect!
