I used to smoke and was heavily democrat. Quit smoking and became an independent! I think this question is interesting. Would you please post your findings when you're done? I'm curious to see the answer.......

Yellow dog Democrat (I'd vote for a yellow dog, if he ran as a Dem), chain smoker. (Trying to quit--smoking, that is.)

Non-smoking Democrat. Went through a phase of flirting with Republicanism but have never, ever smoked.ETA: To the OP, I am curious. Are you trying to find a correlation between smoking and political parties among a general population or only among nurses or other health care personnel? Your results may be skewed because of the high percentage of health care workers on this forum---or it might raise another question: do nurses, regardless of political affiliation, smoke more or less than the general population?

Please remember: Correlation does not equal Causation!!! You are asking a large population of educated health care workers. The answers will be largely skewed toward non-smokers, regardless of political affiliation. Therefore, you cannot assume that political affiliation has any effect on a nurse's choice to smoke or not. Please recognize this in your findings.
Albeit that speech, I'm a socially liberal economically conservative non-smoker. I've never had a cigarette in my life, and I'm proud of it.

Non-smoker, socially liberal, but becoming more fiscally conservative as I see more and more of my patients on Medicaid who are cheating the system...:angryfire
This will really get you going.. Did you know in NY that a patient with no insurance at all and no means of paying can Appeal his discharge to the QIO and therefore delay LEGALLY his d/c by 2 days?
