I'm 24, and I've been trying to raise my GPA, and I've been successful, but it's not enough to enter the nursing program. My GPA is 2.73, and to enter nursing school it has to be a 2.75 or higher. When I first attended college at the age of 19, my GPA was a 3.5, I started going out and partying and not giving a rats butt about college. As a result, my GPA has dropped so low.:angryfire I'am so dissapointed in my self. I still wan't to be a nurse and have been taking classes over, at least the ones I did bad in. I still have a few more to complete, so I have a chance to raise it more. Has anyone been in the same boat as I'am? Boy does the past come back and bite you when you least expect it!

The only advice I can give you is to repeat the courses that you got a C or lower in. If you can, take additional classes to raise your overall GPA. Make sure you investigate the programs you are interested in to see that they will accept the repeated grades instead of only considering the first grade. That is about all you can do. Good luck.

I'm in a similar situation. When I graduated with my first Bachelors degree, I left with a 2.79. What made my gpa go down were indeed science classes....the very classes that I need to get into an accelerated BSN program. During my first undergrad years my major was arts related...something I was great at! So I thought ...all these sciences are stupid...I'll never need them...they'll be lucky if I even make it to lab...I'll be happy with a passing "C". Like you, I partied and freshman year, especially, was like a long expensive vacation. Little did I know a few years later I'd be so drawn to nursing and the medical field. Needless to say, I learned my lesson. So now, I've actually applied as a second degree student (undecided major/interdisciplinary studies) and will retake the classes I bombed at the same university where I plan on applying for the ABSN later this year. Since I first graduated, I got married, had 2 children, got focused, and want so much more for myself and my family. I need to retake biology and chemistry, as well as take A&P 1 & 2 and a statistics class during this summer and fall. My goal of course is A's. So hopefully the school of nursing will look at both transcripts and decide that I am serious about nursing. Good luck!!!
I wish I could go back and change the past but what's done is done. Sometimes I feel like giving up and just switching majors!! But I tell myself that nursing is where I wan't to be. It's frustrating! Thanks for your answer and good luck to you also!

My gpa was actually a lot worse than yours, it was a 2.2 which obviously isn't enough for nursing or any other real program. I messed up too, I wasn't partying I just didn't take college seriously the first year. I was still in the HS mind I guess and missed a few assignments that I didn't feel like doing, plus I didn't really like the college I was going to. I transferred schools and thankfully the GPA doesn't go with you, just the grades. So all the classes I got a C or better in transferred with me. I'm applying to the clinical portion of nursing for next fall and my GPA at the school I'm at now is 3.385 (finishing up pre-reqs for this year) and it should be a 3.5 when I finish up this current semester in two weeks.

i was in the same boat. well kind of. i didnt have low grades because i partied but when i was a freshman i didnt know nursing school was this competitive. so i was just trying to get a C to pass. So i had a few C's in my sciences. i now know how hard it was to get into the program i retook everything i had a C in. i raised my gpa to a 3.45 and it was still hard getting in with that. i JUST got my letter this morning. i applied to 5 schools and was denied to four. So I would advise you to retake everything that was low, and your sciences if they have Bs in them, just to raise it up a little more. I on the other hand didn't want to do that because B's arent bad to me, but if you want a less hard of a time getting in, that's what i'd do.

My first semester GPA in college was a 1.8 (yes, that translates into academic probation). Believe it or not, I was also salutatorian of my high school class. That was a huge wake up call for me to shape up, and the following semester I made dean's list. I graduated with a 3.3 but I shutter to think what I could have ended up with without that first semester which is forever going to haunt me. Since then, I have been striving to achieve nothing less than an A because I believe I can do it.
Don't give up your dreams - you can overcome your record!

Yes, the past is a butt-biter! I had a TOPS Honors Scholarship (the equivalent of free college+stipend in Louisiana). I blew that of course my first semester by partying and withdrawing from classes because they were hard and getting involved with the wrong people & a bad boyfriend (who is now in the grave from drugs) so I can relate. The important thing is to move forward and to learn from your mistakes and not to repeat them. You can overcome the past and be glad you have the second chance. You just have to show that you are motivated w/ actions, letters, and persistence. Best of luck.

I did the same thing as all of you, except when I graduated with a degree in accounting, I had a 2.59. OMG is right. The good thing is that the accelerated program at IUPUI takes a minimum of 2.5 (yes, I barely am eligble for consideration). BUT......that is all that depends on the past. You are able to retake course, luckily I didn't start bombing until I entered Business School, so all of my social sciences and the like were A's, A-'s and B+'s and I just have to retake all of the courses that I need that are 7 years or older and of course the others like Physio and Micro. But, the good thing is that they don't average grades. Check with your school to see if you have to take a course over, if they only count it the second time.
It is a good thing though, that you are allowed to increase your graduation GPA. At my school, if I would have done any worse, I would have to look at other career options. So, count yourself lucky that you are still able to be in consideration if you increase your grad GPA.
And good luck. You definitely can do it. Take advantage of all of the help that you are offered.

I did the party thing too and my GPA is a 2.73 and I just got in my local CC RN program. The key was the NET. Had to get a 90 composite to do it anything less and I wouldnt have had enough points. It CAN be done. Just keep trying!

I am in the same situation at this very moment. I raised my GPA up to a 3.57 and unfortunately my home situation was falling apart and my GPA dropped to a 3.27 OMG!!! I have been accepted into the prenursing program at WMU but I am nervous that I will not be accepted into the Professional portion of the program. I don't know what to do. I know that this is what I want and I am going to do everything possible to get in but I am lost.

Does everyone and their brother have a 3.9 GPA? Geez, enough of the ******* contests. That hight GPA of yours won't help you land a job in this economy.
