Im 24 and I want to be a nurse badly but my age discourages me!

Published

Guys, I'm new to this site....

So here is my story, I'm 24 years old. I'm attending a 4 year college and I'm in my Junior year. I'm completing my pre-reqs so that I can get into the program at my school.

Here's the thing...

I have come very far, yes I know, but I can't help but get mad at myself! I should have been a nurse 2 years ago, but when I graduated from H.S...I took a year off, got lazy, and when I decided to go to Community school I didn't take it serious enough.

Now that I'm older and watch the people of my H.S. class already integrated in their field of choice I just can't help but feel discouraged, All I can think about is that I'll be so old by the time I have my FIRST bachelors degree ... Sometimes I cry to sleep thinking I'll never get there. I dont want to give up, and I know I should move forward and not dwell on the past and let go of the "what if's"... I'm just venting ... I know what I want, and I want to become a nurse. I just hope I can make it there.

ditto to what the others said...I'm 37 and have just survived (and passed!) my first semester of the nursing program YAY!!! and I'll be 39 when I graduate...

Shoulda, coulda, woulda. All that matters is what you're doing now and what you're going to do in the future.

Coming from the 34-year-old single-mom-to-be going back to school again and starting over in more ways than one!

Be proud of yourself for doing it now. :)

Here's the thing. Let's say it takes you until you're 30 to get a nursing degree (which is 6 years - I bet you can do it faster than that!). You're going to turn 30 some day NO MATTER WHAT. You can either turn 30 with a nursing degree...or with no degree and lots of regrets. Which do you choose? You cannot change the choices you've made in the past, and remember - they weren't necessarily bad or wrong choices! They've led you to where you are today. You can only choose where you go from here. Time is going to pass no matter what. It's up to you to choose what to do with that time.

Said by someone who will (knock on wood) be graduating with her BSN next year at the age of 27 - and I still feel young.

I posted before but, I am 29, not yet in the RN program and going for my BSN :) I probably will be in my mid 30's by the time I finish! I might even go for NP so, LOTS of school. It is never ever too late, it doesn't matter what anyone else says because it's your life!! They are not "your life" and it doesn't matter what anyone else says :)

Keep pushing forward and be confident! You got this!

Sarah

I don't mean to offend anyone with my post. It's just something that has been bothering me, but one thing is true and I agree with you, I've grown a lot over the years, and I feel so determined now more than ever to reach my goal. It's all a learning experience, and I know I should learn to look at the cup half full rather than half empty. Thank you for your words, everyone that has replied to my post, I thank you all. I am definitely taking everyone's advice and letting go of all the should have could have would haves. I am still learning, and I know that what counts is today. Thank you.

I've been in college since 1998 :o Ok, so I did take time off here and there for moving (hubby was in the Army) and had kids, but I still haven't finished school! I am 35 and only have an AA! I am close to a BA is psychology, but changed majors to nursing. I will be 37 when I get my ADN!

You're a baby!! I just graduated with my first degree and I'm 43!!

Do not feel that way at all. I am a 26 yr. old single mother of a two year old girl (terrible twos), always wanted to become a nurse but decided to get my first degree in Criminal Justice in 2008 instead. I had a fear of Anatomy or yet any science. I am now taking the prerequisites to apply to the nursing school at the college I attend now. I first worked in a prison after obtaining my first degree and my daughter was a newborn then and I couldn't stand the risk of me not coming home to her due to the dangers of my job. So I decided to face my fears of science classes and go back and get my second degree in nursing. Stepping out on faith, I have never been so happy before. I finally am happy with my decision to nursing instead of doing something I disliked as a career. So don't think that your age is of importance...YOU CAN DO IT. It's better late than never. I did and so have others in are age range. I wish you the best of luck :)

I think it's adorable that you were more afraid of science than criminals. lol ;) Congrats on taking the leap- science is fun, you're going to love it.

Sarah!

I live in Twin cities. We have a lot of students in their 40-s in my program. Our oldest student is 50

I am 38 y/o. I will be graduating in Dec. 2012. Keep up the good work. You are still very young and its never to late to follow your dreams.

Clearly you can see that age isn't an issue... nursing is one of those careers that you can start anytime and if you have the passion for learning, then you can be successful at any age...

P.S. I'm 43 and starting a BSN program here in Southern California in January, 2012. You can do anything you want...anytime you want.
