I'm afraid that I will never become a nurse and be stuck with 11k in loans

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm afraid that I won't become a nurse because my mother refuses to co-sign on any loans for me. I know her and she would rather pay for something she can't afford.

Like she's about to go on Maternity Leave as a single mom and she's paying for my summer classes, my car maintenance, phone bill, and some times gas money if I dont have it. Plus she's saving $500 a week, and pay the

I will be applying for the nursing program very soon this Fall but I know that I probably won't end up going as I have to pay rent for housing (there's no dorms) and plus the 7,000 a semester. Which I need a loan. I tried talking my mother into co-signing before but she's really pessimistic and belives that it will garnish her wages. But I already have 11k in student loans with the goal of becoming a nurse (which my mothers knows this and supports me) but I just wish that she could just lower her views for once and help me out.

So I'm thinking that I should just apply for the program, put the deposit down for an apartment and just play as I go and hope that mother would be just a little sympathetic to my plight and co-sign a loan for me.

When I told my mother that my apartment will cost $400 a month her eyes bugged out and I knew that she was calculating all those months into her head of how much she gone have to pay for me. But she wouldn't have do that if she just co-sign for me.

I'm not really sure where I'm going with this post so I'll just ask a question: How can I talk my mother into co-signing for me?

Sorry if your eyes hurt from reading all of this bad grammer. But the text box won't get any bigger since I'm on my phone and I don't really know how to work Allnurses. I used to post on Reddit until I heard about this site.

No one should cosign a loan that they are not able and willing to pay back themselves. Your mom could be financially devastated by taking on the responsibility of an unforgivable loan. Plus she has 4 other kids, who will also have to finance their own educations.

I'm surprised you worked out the math of 11K being the better option than commuting to a CC a few days a week. 11K for GE/pre reqs for someone who cannot afford it is non sensical. Even a shared apartment near a CC would be less expensive, as has been how my daughter and I are going it. So far she's debt free.

It sounds like your mom is already doing a lot to support you (paying for your classes, etc). Co-signing a private loan is a terrible idea for anyone, including a parent. Private school loans are non -dischargeable. If something happens to you or if you can't find work, your mom will be on the hook for the entire amount and she won't be able to discharge it, even if she claims bankruptcy. You will not be able to defer these loans if you can not find a job after nursing school (or if that job pays too little). The reality of the nursing field now, is that it is challenging to find work--you would need to be prepared for a period of unemployment or under-employment even with the RN. This is especially true if you are not obtaining a BSN. It sounds like you need to come up with a plan B-- such as finding a job (in any field) and saving money to cover the costs beyond the federal loans that you can take out. Your mom is doing the right thing--giving you money directly for your classes and avoiding private school loans.

Why is earning your LPN at job corps plan B?

That should be Plan A.

You go to school for free. They give you a place to live for free...

This solves all of your problems.

Then your can bridge to RN and pay for it with your LPN salary.

This is the smartest option...

It would've been my plan A if I hadn't just found out about it when my older sister joined. But I don't want to drop out of school this new school year. My plan is to just take all of my prerequisites and go from them on what path I choose to take.

The 11k is the total of loans I will have to take out by the spring of 2017. And honestly I would've to take oUT the same for CC because I got awarded by both schools of 5550 of loans and minimum grants.

I think you need to rethink this, you can have your lpn and a place to live for free, why would you pass this up. Get the lpn then do a lpn to rn program.

Let's get some more information. Are you over 21? Are you working 20 hours per week? If not you need to work more hours. You say you bring home $170 every 2 weeks. How you accrued 11K in student loans before you even start is concerning. Are you attending the most economical school available to you? Locally the community college charges about $700 per semester, the state university about $3,000 per semester for tuition. Your mom is a truck driver? (Semi payment). If she is smart, she will not co-sign for you because if you default on your loans, she will have to pay them. Looks like she is providing for: Herself (1), new baby(2) you (3), 3 siblings (6) & uncle (7) a total of 7 people!!!!! Sounds like she is going overboard already. The reality is that there are nursing programs of various prices.

Are you sharing an apartment? the $400 is rent only? What about food? utilities?

What is your plan B? if your mom will not cosign? Do you have one? You may need to postpone nursing school until you can save up or figure out Plan C.

The age cutoff for needing parental info for student loans is *25*, not 21.

One thing to get a loan

another thing to pay for it....

i think it sounds like your mom is strapped right now

there are hospital LVN programs, that cover cost of school if you commit to a limited # of years employment, but you need decent gpa, and references..

best wishes

"I have 11k in federal loans. I just need my mom to cosign on private loans. My plan is to have my dad do the parent plus loans if he has bad credit so he can get denied and I get my student loans in my own name. But who knows. I work at subway but I get paid like $170 every two weeks which sucks sooo bad. I'm hoping to get work study at my university for the next school year which I was offered $2500 a semester and I could save that for nursing school."

Do I have a comprehension problem or do you not already have 11K in loans plus now you want your mom to sign for more?

I am aware as I have a 21 y.o daughter in college. I was simply trying to establish if OP is over 21 or under.

Here is my plan of saving 6,000.

I save $500 from my refund this semester. And I was awarded Work Study already but my college. Actually I already received my aid in the amount of 20,000. So I'm going to put the 2,500 up each semester from work study. Then put up 2,000 from my spring semester refund.

Please explain; The $20,000 you have received? for work study? Grants? Loans????Not understanding what you mean by "putting up" do you mean saving $2,500 each semester, when you are asking your mom to help with the $400 for rent. I am confused about these amounts and more confused that you are asking your mom to co sign for loans.

QUOTE=Keracee;9054735]I tried working 20 hours per week but my job is overstaffed and my manager is not lenient with the hours at all. She keeps giving me hours like 10 or 13 or 17 per week. I want to quit but I will not do that because I don't want to burden my mom even further.

You need to get a different job. You need to work 20 hours per week if going to school full-time.

The moment I saw you wanted to add debt to your disabled dad I lost all empathy.

The reason I don't attend CC is because my university is 10 min (5 min by car) away from me and it was convenient to take the bus there when I had no car and my mother came home 1 night per week. While my CC is 22 mins away (1 and 30 min by bus) and it gets very bad here in the winter. I wanted to rent out a room for $200 but my mom said no find an apartment.

My CC would be $2,400 max per semester, assuming you like shiny new textbooks. That savings of $3,200 a year would more than cover the cost of purchasing and maintaining a reliable used car. If you have class 4 days a week for two 16-week semesters, that's a savings of $25 college costs for every single 22 minute drive.

In other words, I think community college is a great option.
