This article caught my eye.http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/World/20120613/japan-budget-carrier-skymark-airlines-120613/ This airline posted a list that stated ''flight attendants aren't obligated to be polite or cater to the whims of those on-board'' they are there to provide safety. Can you imagine if nurses posted something like this?!?!
It got me thinking, if you could post a list what would be on it.
Mine would include:
-Staff reserve the right to discontinue call bell service at any time at the discretion of the nurse.
I have no idea what you're talking about concerning an O2 tank; none was in any of my posts.
I have no idea what YMMV is, as English is my sole language.
Beyond that, I think until you read ONLY what is written and respond ONLY to what someone actually SAYS (rather than guessing what they might be thinking?), our communication is now done.
- The reference to the O2 tank, is from a different thread, yesterday I believe, here on these boards. I didn't say it was your post.
- YMMV: Your mileage may vary...meaning your experience may possibly be different than mine.
- Correct, I do not guess what people may think. The internet is flat, and I do not have ESP.
- ESP: Extra sensory perception....the ability to read minds.
Why is it whenever there is an obviously light-hearted thread there is always someone who over analyzes (sp?) everyone's posts? I've noticed this in several threads lately. It's like "how dare you even think this way, you obviously don't care about your patients". It's like you can't even have a sense of humor, even a dark one on this board anymore without getting a lecture about how mean we are to vent about things or see the humor in situations.
Many fun threads have been ruined this way, it's sad. Nursing is not easy and yes people think mean things at times, but it's better to get it out in a vent than bottle it up. But thinking a thing and actually doing/saying a thing is a big difference. It's more of what you wish you could say kind of thing.

Actually, I say that all the time :)
I can get away with it in psych, at least with the "not obligated to cater to whims" part. I always try to be polite, and I do try to accommodate reasonable requests...but I tell them flat-out that no matter what, safety is the priority. Nice thing is that 95% of the time, management WILL back nurses up on that.
Now try posting something like that in a Planetree hospital, and you'll see the outrage break loose pretty fast

The flagrant self righteousness must make them feel better I guess..

One of the reasons I love working psych.
Daisy, how about: nurses are not obligated to find your visitors a pillow.
(Pillows are hard enough to come by for the patients who need propping up all over!)
Nurses are not obligated to listen to you sing your lyrics as to why you need to leave soon.
Nurses are not obligated to provide your family members with monthly sanitary supplies.
Things I would like to have posted on the unit
1. The more you interrupt me the longer it is going to take for me to get everyones medications pulled.
2. No, our visiting hours are NOT suggested times.
3. Yes you have to go to group
4. Act like a toddler, you will be treated like a toddler.
5. Yes, I am telling you to go sit your butt down and stop being so darn nosey. Trust me, the pt we are calming down wants to beat the crap out of you, and while it may be what you need, I cannot allow that to happen.
6. If you stop taking your meds and come back in so psychotic and paranoid that you are refusing all meds, we reserve the right to do medications over objection without the long drawn out process to get it ordered.
7. If you leave AMA we reserve the right to say NO the next time you come into the ER for help. You dont agree with what we say, go somewhere else.
I think that "we" need to be reminded that this was meant as a light hearted thread for all those times when one behavior or another has driven "us" to distraction.
There are certain behaviors that are repeated, over and over again, that we can empathize with for "we" all have experienced them. There are those visitors and patients that can drive a Saint to commit a crime.
This is nothing but a tongue in cheek salute to those things we muttrer under our breath.
Let's stick to the true spirit of the thread and not questions another's integrity.

No fairy tales here. I didn't say I have never seen an unruly visitor. I'm saying that the majority are not....and for the majority who may make the job a tad inconvenient, they shouldn't be the recipient of hostility in the general direction of all visitors.
I once had an ER patient who was in a serious MVA. We notified his wife, who arrived shortly after, and promptly walked past the nsg station, into the room, and clocked her husband on the jaw, screaming "YOU WRECKED MY CAR *** *****".
I'm not saying she would benefit from a polite tutorial on how to use the TV controller, but I AM saying that this particular, very occasional, situation shouldn't tarnish my attitude for the other hundred visitors that I will meet that week, who might be standing in my way slightly.......I should be grateful that they are there to visit my pt, and not annoyed.
I think you get it, yes?
