some insight on obama's foriegn nurse idea. what is he thinking? there are so many of us students working our butts off in school to graduate...........but we might not have a job to go to b/c of foriegn nurses, hospital's hiring freezes across the country, etc. as a student, i don't know what to think and just hope it will be better by the time i graduate. what do you all think about the situation?:heartbeat:redpinkhe:heartbeat

What exactly does that have to do with Obama?

Obama wants to STOP importing nurses...

i forgot some things lol :)! have you been following the stories of the nursing shortage reportedly coming to an end, lack of jobs all across america for rns b/c the hospitals' having to budget for the economy, and the stories reported that the media has been proclaiming a "nursing shortage" whereas 8 out of 10 new grads are saying cannot find a job anywhere? if you have, what do you think about all this as students. i myself am a student and am wondering what other students think about it. do you just ignore it or hope for the best or what?:redbeathe:redpinkhe:redbeathe

The aforementioned article was published in January 2008, approximately one year before President Obama assumed the role of the U.S. President. You cannot blame the supposed "floodgates" of foreign nurses on any particular leader.

In addition, retrogression has been in effect since 2006. If any foreign nurse wishes to work in the U.S., it will take many years for their papers to be approved.

Moreover, much of the information within the article is outdated. It cites statistics and dates from as far back as 2003 and 2005. Times have drastically changed since then.

It would be helpful if current articles on this issue were posted. :)

sorry i read that wrong, but he really is not the point at all, not by a longshot was he my point. sorry for the mistake, i thought he wanted to bring in foriegn nurses to help with the "shortage"

commute, find me a current article then. i want to know all about this. i didn't make this thread for negativity guys. come on.

this article was written on jan 2008. it's more of a bush administration problem, but i think it was also a clinton administration problem. in any case, it is a major problem now, with the economy and all.

why is the us federal government lax with issuing visas in general? it's not just licenses to foreign educated/trained nurses but with all other occupations as well? i mean it's not like us professional jobs are falling from the sky (even before the bush years)? was there ever a time were professional jobs were falling from the sky? (sarcasm)

the only time i can think of was the it boom in early 1990's... silicon valley. private computer firms there started to hire hundreds of employees from 'third world countries'. through the years, they turned into thousands of visas! other companies all over the us started doing this. then the it bubble burst and they still continue to hire people from 'third world countries' so they can pay them less.

i hope this won't be the future trend in nursing! yay for obama for trying to save the nursing profession, but, he won't be the president forever. what if next president doesn't see it as obama sees it?

Wasn't trying to be negative. Just want to know what we are talking about before talking about.

It's a recession. If you are in school now the smart thing to do is go get employed somewhere as a CNA or tech and use that to get your foot in the door.

I'm guaranteed a position at my facility upon passing the NCLEX. Shrug. It's time to get smart and make oneself marketable. Bring multiple skill sets with you. Maintain a 4.0. (Yes, that IS going to matter as new grad positions dry up and become more competitive).

ETA:

I didn't realize the gov't was lax on letting people come here... How far backlogged is the retrogression?? 3+ years? More?

here's a recent article that seems to be perpetuating the nursing shortage myth.

atheos you are right on the money babe. i did get my cna certification last month. the only jobs available are for ones who have 1-2 years plus experience in my area. it's a long story, but i didn't get the job i interviewed for.everything you said about getting your foot in the door and maintaining your grades, everything helps you know? and that article might not have been the greatest example, i was just trying to bring this issue into light in the students forum so we all can learn and know the current situation that is going on.i wanted to hear what other students, like myself, say on the situation.

if you search" nursing shortage over" on google, there are about a dozen or more articles about this.

what exactly does that have to do with obama?

obama wants to stop importing nurses...

that's right:

obama is against importing foreign nurses-

"the notion that we would have to import nurses makes absolutely no sense,” he (president obama) said at a white house forum on health care on thursday....
