I didn't realize the gov't was lax on letting people come here... How far backlogged is the retrogression?? 3+ years? More?

Visa bulletin indicates for EB3 (Which is most foreign nurses) unavailable. last month they was processing date of 2003 unless from India and date is 01. No more visas will be available until start of the new Fiscal Year in October.

Much has already been written about retrogression in the International forum and we are seeing many many nurses affected. Has been ongoing since Oct 06 and no indication things will change.

Maybe it's just different in my area, but we have a HUGE shortage of nurses... Good nurses. Thing is, so many people are applying at hospitals rather than other facilities that they just assume that there are no nursing jobs here.

I have to ask.

In your area is it an over-saturation of nurses or is it not enough patients?

I know here, in SE Va, it seems to be low census that is making it tough, PRN and Flex RNs are moving to full time and new grads are left on the outside looking in. An OR RN freind told me they are working every other day so everyone can stay on until things pick up.

I graduate in a month, worked an externship last summer and stayed on as a Care Partner (aide) with hopes of sliding right in as a new grad, but my manager had to bring in 2 PRN/Flex transfers from other units rather than hire the 2 externs from last summer. Some of the decision is related to the cost of training NGs, as throughout preceptorship they (we) are dead weight costing essentially twice (or more) than one experienced RN.

The aforementioned article was published in January 2008, approximately one year before President Obama assumed the role of the U.S. President. You cannot blame the supposed "floodgates" of foreign nurses on any particular leader.

In addition, retrogression has been in effect since 2006. If any foreign nurse wishes to work in the U.S., it will take many years for their papers to be approved.

Moreover, much of the information within the article is outdated. It cites statistics and dates from as far back as 2003 and 2005. Times have drastically changed since then.

It would be helpful if current articles on this issue were posted. :)

I'd also point out that this is simply a blog... anybody can set up a WordPress blog and say whatever they wish with no editorial oversight whatsoever.

That said, the "shortage" myth seems to be being perpetuated and I'm even hearing nurses in the area saying it... despite the fact that we're seeing hundreds of applicants for every job.

Hi all just wanted to say that recruiting foreign nurses to fill shortages has little effect on local nurses or nurses to be.This recruiting was done in my country where we have a lone hospital. The foreign nurses were given 3 yr contracts which have now expired and they have gone back to their respective countries. While they were here though they were very instrumental in relieving the stress off the local nurses and were in my opinion very friendly and professional and i would welcome them back any day with open arms.
