If you could no longer work as a nurse, for whatever reason, what other job or career would you choose? This is assuming that you have only ever worked as a nurse and your degree is strickly nurse related.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I'm attracted to introvert-type jobs such as long-distance truck driving, librarianship, grounds-keeping, and working at home.

I'd love to work as a mortician, because dead people don't complain. ;)

Specializes in Med/Surg, ICU, educator.

Motorcycle mechanic, or maybe a reviewer for a motorcycle magazine, you know, get to ride all of the bikes, write reviews....that would be too cool.

I would be a writer, or go back to school and major in English. Or both. :)

Petunia, that sound perfect for a nurse! I mean, don't we all have to be 'creative writers'?!

Ahh, the need for speed!! lol, you wouldn't happen to be an ER/ICU nurse would you?

OK, if I were younger, I would like to be a federal agent such as ATF, FBI, DEA. But, since I am not- I tell everyone that my dream job is to own a laundromat. Seriously.

Please don't judge me.:p

LOL, what a drastric change!! I wonder, how does one go from :coollook: ATF, DEA, FBI..... to owning a laundrymat! Maybe you get to get 'clues' about who they are and what they do by their laundry...or lack of it! :wink2: Very interesting!

I would be a professional jazz trumpet player....or go back to school for music therapy...(previous career options for me that competed with nursing)..

Music therapy! That's something that I hadn't though of. There is a hospice out there that uses this so completely and effectively! I've also seen it work in some rather astonishing ways with alzheimer patients. Wow, good for you that you have found not only 1 profession to love but 2! Thanks for the reply!:smokin:

I'd love to work in a bookstore again. That was my favorite job, that and my library job. Heh, I totally should have been a librarian. :D SHHHHH!!

It's funny, so many nurses LOVE to read! Several want to own bookstores too! I like the thought of being around so many interesting books all day and from a previous poster, drinking tea and coffee all day too, heh, heh!

A librarian huh? :typing Bet you have excellent spelling and punctuation! Thanks for the post.

Specializes in icu/er ccrn.

i would love to sit around and do nothing and collect govt checks and watch jerry springer drinking malt liquior, but that would make me a hypocrite...i guess i'd would be chasing the taliban in tora bora or walking a patrol in bagdad. then again that laundry mat thing sounds pretty good.

win the lotto and live in a fantasy world where my number one stress factor is where in the world to vacation next and did i wear that top already. :)

Specializes in Operating Room Nursing.

I like the bookshop idea. I would love to open up a bookshop catering entirely to sci-fi/fantasy, have a little coffee shop inside.

Anything to do with astromony. The size and complexity of the cosmos never ceases to amaze me.

Specializes in med-surg 18 months, respiratory 3.5 year.

I always figured that if I flunked nursing school, I would become a tattoo artist, as I have prior art training....
