:wink2:hello! I am currently trying to get into the nursing program at my school and I have literally run out of pre-requisite classes to take after this semester. My advisor suggested that if I do not get into the program this semester that I think about taking up a dual major but I have no idea what I could possibly do.
I am interested in health care and nursing.
Does anybody have and suggestions for me as far as health care/ nursing related majors?
Thank you!!

Biology, psychology and nutrition are 3 areas that come to mind where you may have a fairly substantial number of credits towards a major or minor simply by completing your pre-requisites.
Business management would be a different field of study, but valuable in the workplace.
Good luck

Perhaps you could consider taking EMT/Paramedic classes while you wait. This will give you a great basis for a lot of aspects of nursing (basic pharm, ECG, assessment, prioritizing, basic patholgy, etc.). Not only will the information help, but you could also work as a medic part time once you do get into the nursing program if you chose to.
There are also Paramedic- RN bridge programs that you could pursue if you never did get into your schools program and had to pursue the RN elsewhere.

Public health? Depends on what sort of nursing work you are interested in.

EMT class would be a great idea but to become a Paramedic you will need to work as an EMT for a year first. But why not work on your other classes for your degree--English, Humanities etc. When I finally took the classes to become an RN, I had EVERY other class I needed for my degree done. I was the only one in my nursing program who had JUST NURSING CLASSES!!! No math, history and it made the actual nursing classes easy as they were my only focus.

The paramedic program at most universities only require EMT certification ( rather than a years experience) and a handful of prereqs that you probably already completed for nursing school anyway.
I think it is a great idea!

I was just about done with a ba in health care administration when my number came up on the wait list for the nursing program. Maybe something along administration? Keeps you in health care and hopefully provides a few avenues later on. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

extra classes such as emt, paramedic both would be great. Phlebotomy would provide an introducrion to invasive procedures for you, and you can never go wrong by taking pathophysiology or pharmacology even if they are designed for allied health students not nursing.
a dual major in another health care field is usually hard due to the clinical classes taking a lot of time. Minors are easier to work in. what options are available in your area the down side of nursing school is you learn a little about everything, if you can work extra classes into your training it will never hurt. A FNP i know has a BA in psych and says it helps her deal with psych issues as a FNP.

What about Nursing/Respiratory therapist, I think the combination would be great.

What about focusing in classes you are interested in to get a minor or certificate. Extra degree's seem to help getting into nursing school. I got a certificate in women's studies and as I'm at a community college I got a general associates degree too.

If you are going for your ADN, take all the gen ed co-req's you can get, and then look to see what gen ed pre-req's you'll need later for a BSN or MSN program, that's what I did and now I only have 2 classes left to apply for a BSN program, if you are waiting entry for a BSN program maybe a social work minor? or even a business degree if you wanted to move into administration in the future
