Student loans is covering ALL of my ADN. They covered ALL of my Masters degree and part of my bachelors degree. When I first started college I was on my own so I had a lot of PELL grants, scholarships, etc. Now that I have a post-graduate degree, I'm no longer eligible for grants, etc. So student loans are the way I'm going. I am going to a CC this time so the cost is MUCH MUCH lower compared to my previous two college experiences.

I'm lucky that my husband is paying for my education, but I would call your financial aid department and see what they have to offer you. Good luck to you.

I wish I could MAKE my husband pay for my bills, but I'm not married. ;)

I was laid-off last year, so the government will be paying for my NS program, and I have applied for scholarships too. NO Loans this time around! I don't qualify for financial aid because I already have a degree, so I look at it as a blessing to be laid-off. I no longer enjoyed my job and didn't have the heart to quit.

I had heard that there was some issues for a second bacherlor's and loans. Also, I highly doubt I'd qualify for need based loans. I did look and there are unsubsidized loans which have a yearly max of $12k. That doesn't seem like a lot.

There is no issue with second bachelor's and loans- I'm working on my second and I got unsubsidized loans.

To answer PP questions- student loans are basically paying for everything. I already had some from my prior degree, so I'll likely be paying them forever, but I will be paying them by doing something that I love.

I don't recieve financial aid anymore (too many credits for a ADN since I already have a AS in Biology) so I'm using my savings and I'm working too. Luckily, I still live at home, which equals no bills except for my car upkeep/gas, food, and transportation, so that helps A LOT! But, it's not cheap, so I'm spending a lot of time at home, not spending my money. Thing is, I have so much studying, the last time I went out, it was for a study group and we all put in on some Little Ceasar's $5.00 pizzas. Some of my classmates are using financial aid, some loans, etc. I'd say the majority are paying out-of-pocket, though, as most are non-traditional students and don't really recieve aid.

I agree, though, I'd check in with my financial aid office and see what is available.

I think the OP asked a question regarding loan $ in excess of costs. Usually, the money is sent to the school to pay for your tuition and fees first and the excess amount is refunded to you as a check or in some schools as a debit card, which you will then use to pay for books and your living expenses if you live off campus. Hopefully the financial aid office has factored in personal expenses in your total cost of attendance.

Oh dear, first year of nursing school was sooooooo expensive. I think I spent over $700 on books and supplies including a stethoscope, BP cuff, clamps, scissors. The only good thing about the books was they were used throughout the entire program. We'd have to buy maybe one new book each semester, but it wasn't bad. We'd also have to purchase notes from the school which was ridiculous. They costed around $25 each semester!

Our uniform was around $60. I have it in my shed right now, but I'm itching to burn the thing. I never want to see it again.

My tuition wasn't so bad because I went to a community college. I have another degree so I didn't qualify for much aid. Luckily I always found a way to get the money for tuition each semester. Often would have to borrow it from a family member then would pay them back ASAP around tax refund time. I did a payment plan one semester which was easier than paying a lump sum.

But nursing school is expensive. I saved so much money by car pooling to clinical sites with a few other ladies. Gas money adds up quickly for school and where I went you need a reliable car or you're SOL since there was so much driving involved.

I'm covering my tuition with federal grants and loans. One loan I'm paying off while I'm in school since it will immediately begin accumulating interest when I graduate. Once I graduate my other loan won't gain interest until 6 months and I have 10 years to pay it off.

Register for FASFA grants around the 1st of January of the year you will be attending classes because those grants (FREE MONEY!!) are first come, first serve. Otherwise you may be able to apply for different scholarships based on academic performance, heritage, socioeconomics, etc.
