Hello
My name is Lisa I am 33 years old. Soon to be 34..(where did all the time go)
I started my journey about a year ago Trying to get into the nursing program. At my local community college.
first hurdle "ma'mm you have never graduated High School' So I dust off my diploma and send it to the school. and they tell me we cannot find your records:banghead: So I go take my GED. Pass that
Then They tell me I have to retake my ACT OK no problem. Its only been 14 year how hard can it be :brnfrt: Well I did do better than before but not to My personal standards I got a 19.. I am retaking it on Feb 6.. shooting for a 20 something!
So I received a scholarship for taking my GED and getting a good score but in the fine print it say (no more than 12 credits a semester) the nursing programs are more than 12 credits a semester. but hey it was free
So and way I have been trying to figure out how to finance school and I do not qualify for financial aid. because I am in bankruptcy. so loans are out. pell grant out, So I plan on draining my 401 k and my husbands 401k..
I will work 2 days a week during nursing school. So I will probably lose my car and my house. Because my bankruptcy payments are 1000 a month. When my husband and I discussed going to school he said go for it. You are not the same person when we met 5 years ago. You seem Like you are miserable.. YES!! I am In A job I detest
My soul slowly fading because I was meant to do something else! I had the chance to go to nursing school when I was 20, But I thought I knew everything then. But life has taught me one thing It can all be replaced its just stuff. I might be uncomfortable for a little while but it will not last for ever.So as I get ready to send my applications in and study for the ACT,NET and TEAS.. I know that maybe 2 years from now I will be graduating
A NURSE AND DAMM PROUD OF IT! BECAUSE I AM WORTH IT! :p:p:p:p:p

Well I say, YOU GO GIRL!
It's going to be TONS of hard hard work, (currently in the 2nd semester) but if you want it bad enough it's possible. I love your confidence! The most important advice that I have for you is stay optimistic & only surround yourself with positive people. Oh, and STUDY. :)
As far as your financial situation, I really don't know what to tell you. I'm 19, and I have NO experience in that area...But if you think you can pull it off then I would definitely go for it!
Good Luck & Best Wishes

I so feel your pain I am in the same boat somewhat just trying to get in to nursing school. The struggles are dissapointing but what people don't understand is that a person who really wants to be a nurse is a unstoppable force and will keep going until they complete the task. Keep fighting to make your dreams come true.

I can totally relate. I can tell by your optimism and confidence that you will definitely get into a RN program and be successful. I'm still waiting to get accepted and I've been applying for over a year now so don't give up. Keep your head up and let us know how everything goes. Take Care

not to be negative but it sounds like you have a lot of financial things you need to straighten out. one of the girls in our nursing program had to drop out because she became homeless and couldn't balance the burden. not saying this would happen to you but nursing school is a big big big stress ball and just reading your situation made me stressed. i wish you all the best for your future

My husband and I were in the same boat as you this last fall. we had to file a chapter 13 bankrupcy. At the time i thought oh no how are we going to pay for school now, but with a few phone calls to the lawyer, trustee and fin aid office i found out i still get all grants pell ect... and i found out that i can still get my student loan if the lawyer files a motion for me to take out debt for school. i hope this helps you a little i would hate to see you drain you 401k if you don't have to. Good luck and best wishes to you i'm sure you will make it through!

I have a similar situation without the bankruptcy. I have taken money out of my 401 to pay for school too. I am living off a credit card and still taking pre-req's. Im in Anatomy 1 right now. I can only hope that it hasnt all been for nothing and I can get into a program.

You need a new financial aid advisor! Pell grants and Ford Direct Loans are unaffected by bankruptcy. What you need to do is go to a state-run college (not stevens heneger or some other non transferable credit school that charges 1 than 10's of thousand per semester) and have a sit down with a financial aid advisor. Whoever told you financial aid is out is dumber than a box of rocks. That is unless you and your husband make too much money to qualify for it. Seeing as how you are in bankruptcy and shooting for a job that makes about 50k per year (more if you have dependents) and have to tap a 401k, i have to assume you meet the income requirements for aid. Just about the only other thing that can disqualify you from financial aid is thing that disqualifies you is a drug offense while recieving financial aid but since this is your first go at college i doubt that too.
Now all that aside there are also many grants that many people just assume they can't get, but they are out there.
Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov click fill out your fafsa and go through the whole thing. There is no question of bankruptcy (to my recollection) when at the end it will tell you your efc#. Come back to this board when you have that and ill try to help ya some more.

nope, there aren't any questions about bankruptcy on the fasfa. i just filled out my fafsa on jan 1 and there is no questions on bankruptcy, when your sar comes back it just tells you to contact the fin aid office and let them know your in bankruptcy, you send them proof and that is it.
Mayday!

Have you started on any of your pre-reqs yet?
Since you have a scholarship for taking your GED that caps your credit hours at no more than 12 per semester, I would suggest taking a few pre-req courses with that scholarship money, so it at least doesn't go to waste. You could always start with A&P I and Intro to Psych., which would give you 7 hours, and you EARNED that scholarship money, you DESERVE to be able to use it!
Good luck!

Have you tried to get financial aid. Usually youcan get financial no matter how ad your credit is. I knew someone that was able to gt financial aid and was in bankrupcy. You should at least try if you haven't
I wish you luck on your journey in becoming a nurse.
