I currently started as a newer grad on a child psyc unit. It is very different than adult. The pros are if a kido swings at you its not as threatening as a full grown male. Alot of times your helping these kids get through difficult times and able to make a greater impact while there still influenced. I find adults are more set in there ways such as the use of negative coping skills. The cons are you often are acting as a parent and need to have the skill set to deal with behaviors and setting limits. I feel like you have more aggressive outbursts but that just based on my clinicals in adult psyc vs my job. I enjoy my job very much. Just be aware that working in child psyc is not like working in peds. These kids come in very ill and often times due to severely aggressive and defiant behavior. The adolescent mostly come inpt due to SI and depression. Your observations on a normal day are correct. Most of my job is manging behaviors and charting. Other aspects include nrsg assessments, teaching and reinforced coping skills, teaching group,and manging the milieu. Hope this helps paint the picture. I wish you well on your journey.

Hi, I have taken a job as an RN supervisor for a camp in Minnesota for kid and adults with medical and mental conditions. I have been informed that I will be supervising 2 LPN with years of experience on me. I have 2 months as a school nurse under my belt but feel like I might run into some issues with my lack of experience. I have never had any supervisor experience except for working on fundraiser committees. I am looking for some encouragement and advice as I get ready for camp.

I am looking at jobs and the unit is CMIC. What does this mean? It is at HCMC in Minnesota and I can't find it on the web or their website to what this unit is. Please help me understand. Thank you,

:down:Oh I have this book.. I don't like it at all ... it is to random and hard to fallow it took me most almost 2 years to figure out how to navigate it.

here is how to narrow you focus for nsg Dx your first priorities are always airway, breathing, circulation then it goes to maslows needs with physiological needs then safety ect. (In my opinion) Your client two main Dx are risk for impaired skin integrity and risk for falls both are relevant but risk for skin integrity is more important because it harms the patient physiological need and falls has to do with safety. their are some key things her your client has decreased mental status, decrease mobility, impaired nutrition, and anemia and CVA that lead me to the conclusion that skin integrity is the main Nsg Dx. here is a link to a good website for making care plans, it will help with interventions and stuff. http://www1.us.elsevierhealth.com/Evolve/Ackley/NDH7e/Constructor/careplan_063.php This is just my thought process hope that helps ... I wish I had a good worksheet from the start. I attach one I made.. it help me gather the important data that I needed when I got home to work on my paperwork. the other thing is concept mapping. laying out the patient labs, meds, and diagnosis really help you see the holistic view of what is going on and then I add in intervention that related to the whole picture. It is a really good way to mix theory with clinical and help you get more out of the experience. Lastly remain calm.. your there to learn not be the exprience nurse who works off of intuation. I found it really helpful to have a nursing worksheet. I took the pieces of each or the worksheets I liked. I find organization decreases stress. http://www.minnesotanurse.com/work_sheets.htm Bring your drug book, lab values book, and care plan text they can come in handy. the more stress and intimidated you are the more your forget. trust in yourself as a student nurse. Be aware of what you know and what you don't if you are unfamiliar with a test or dx look it up. once I started not trying to be perfect and do everything flawlessly I ended up doing a lot better. This is the only time in your careerer that it okay to say IDK. At this clinical it just important to inform your nurse and instructor when you recognize something is abnormal. when trying to understand the client as a whole it helpful to concept map. write down their past medical hx, drugs, and lab test and see how they relate it allows you to step back and get how everything is interconnected. I just got done with my first hospital clinical and these were some of the lessons I learned. I hope this helps just trust yourself and the rest will fall into place.
