So blah. I do my first OB clinical tomorrow. I'm terrified of babies. And they're gonna make me hold one! I'm soooooooo not a kids person. They're wiggly little critters. Can I go on strike?

What really surprised me about my OB and Peds rotations (where actually I got a lot of experience....lots of IMs, suctioning, assessments, etc) was that most of us actually ended up loving it!! We had one guy in my OB rotation that was very leary about it and now wants to work in OB he enjoyed it that much.

So you just never know! I think most people reallllly enjoy their OB and Peds rotations overall or at least more than they expected. Our Peds rotation was 8 weeks and OB was 8 weeks long. I had just a freakin fantastic OB rotation!!

They're tougher than they look. Remember to support the head and you should be good to go.

I have one of my own and have been doing childcare since 1994. I've held a lot of babies and have never fumbled one. ;)

Alrighty. First two days done. I still don't like it. I held a baby though. Because a nurse pretty much dropped the baby in my arms because she figured I'd catch. And then no one would take it back, and I was afraid to put it down because it's head is floppy. I must admit though, when another student offered to take it, I said, um, no. Kinda cuddly. And cute. Then she barfed on me, but that's okay. At the very least, the OB nurses found it amusing.

Give me a 90 year old with a hip fracture, and I can fling them around, no problem. Go figure.

loving,

You are too funny !!! :lol2: Do me a favor: start a new thread when your rotation is over and let us know how it went!! We all will want to know if you change your mind and decide that pedi or nicu is for you!!! See, 2 days are down AND you decided to keep holding that baby. You even got :barf01: on and you are here with a sense of humor!! If you can live through getting peed and pooped on, and keep that sense of humor, you will have it made!!! Just remember, for some of those babies, you will be the only one that gets to care for them, hold them and love them during your shift. You can make all the difference for them. Take care~

:rotfl: That whole post made me laugh. I bolded my favorite parts. It sounds like you have a great sense of humor and while this might not be "your area" you did great with it. It's great to try new things because it either gives us more options, has us learned we don't dislike something as much as we thought we would or is sets in stone what we don't want to do...but it's worth it no matter which outcome you get.

I learned that working with older people isn't as bad as I thought...but they are still wrinkly critters that don't wipe their own butts. Wait that's a baby too ;)...oh yeah but the baby butt is much smaller.

I feel your terror! I have OB next semester and I have never even held a baby! In fact, whenever all the "mothers" in my class start taking about breastfeeding, bottles, etc I start to zone out ;) (no offense to all the great moms out there- I just can't at all relate)

Be male, you be suprised how many new moms don't want you in their room.

That will happen and I'm sure the male nurses understand why. So you work past that and another mother will come along and be fine with it. Just like being female I will have a male patient who won't want me...maybe not as often as the males (on any floor really) but it's part of the job.

Yes but they're ITTY BITTY. And I'm clumsy.

LOL! You started my Memorial weekend with a lot of laughing. You are so funny! Very cute.
