I talking to yourself a prerequisite to nursing?!?!

Published

I'm just curious what you guys think?? How many times have you been in the nurses station and a coworker starts talking and you say...huh?? Only to get the answer "oh, I was talking to myself"!There are several of my friends at work who are notorious for this. I tell them "unless I hear you say my name I'm just ignoring you":lol2:

I am also guilty as charged! I have been in a pt's room talking to myself (can't remember right now what it was, I think he had several IV meds needed and only 2 sites. I was going over compatibility.)ANYWAYS, I come out of my little "zone" and notice he is starring at me. RED FACED I say "oh, don't mind me. I do my best thinking out loud":lol2:

What about you??

I think it is because we have so many things on our mind. We have to multi-task constantly. When I talk out loud I am usually trying to prioritize or think through something. Maybe hearing yourself say it reassures your confidence in your decision. Ha Ha. But yea everyone i work with, including myself thinks outloud.

LOL when I use to work as a tech I noticed most of the nurses I worked with would talk to themselves. I would sit back with a smile on my face just thinking of all the info that was running through their mind at that time.

Oh yeah, we all talk to ourselves! ;>

I actually had a clinical instructor that took major points off my grade because she said talking to myself scared other nurses and patients. I'm glad to know she's just a crazy as I thought she was.

Specializes in Home Health, Case Management, OR.

Oh hurray I will finally fit in when I become a nurse!! :D I constantly talk to myself at work, especially when I am doing a med pass or charting. The other girls have caught me saying something to myself and they just tell me I am crazy and have lost my mind.
