Frankly I'd take the 30 yd loss. A cuff tear is musculo-tendenous....and while it is fixable, it is a bitc* for pain.

Kewl,
Go see a doctor, like a primary doctor, and let him examine you, prescribe some NSAIDs and maybe refer you for some PT. Treat Rotator cuff surgery (if it is indicated) like the last resort it is. Most primary docs know that some ortho (and other) surgeons who they refer to will likely do surgical interventions and others are more likely to do medical trial first before surgery. Personally, if it were my shoulder, I'd try medical trial of treatment first before i had surgery, but that is my opinion. Often a shoulder is far from "like new" after rotator cuff surgery and rehab.
Definitely have shoulder scope as a last resort! Had mine done last december and while I'm glad I did it, my rehab was one of the hardest things I've ever been through. A little history- I think I hurt mine early last fall lifting weights- no big injury, just increasing pain c mov. Went to my primary, took oral pred, no luck and went to orthoped( luckily I work in surgery and knew who was the best- make sure you find the "shoulder guy" in your area-that makes a big difference in your healing), tried Vioxx, PT, and a series of 3 cortisone injections in shoulder-No relief. Iwas lucky I never had a tear, but bursitiis, tendonitis and impingement and the pain was continuous. Finally decided to have sx in December and was scared to death, because in my area(post-op) widely known that shoulders and lap chole are most painful sx. Made it through okay (pain was rough-but Tylox saved me) but then came sling for 6 weeks and physical therapy 3xwk for 3 months. Was told to expect 6 mos. for pain to subside and full ROM back. We tell our rot cuff. 9mos-1 year. getting the picture? LOONG recovery!!! I had debridement, clavicle excision (all standard) plus capsulorraphy(shrinking of capsule-think of putting saran wrap and heat shrinking over joint).. I had anterior laxity and dislocation which sounds like what you did with your dog. Am pain-free for most part-still have bone pain and can tell when it is going to rain or get cold and have limitations with working out. Bottom line- I am glad I did it but my shoulder will never be the same. This isnt meant to scare just want you to know what you're up against and be sure you find the right MD ( I have seen so many disasters) Let me know if I can help and good luck. Nicki

Having worked ortho for several years i should know the answer to this, and if a patient asked me i wouldn't have to think twice about it, but i'm drawing a blank. I think i have torn my rotator cuff in my left shoulder, i pooped it out being stupid with the dog, but i manged to get it back in (wan't totally out) that was about a month ago, i can deal with the pain, and the only reason i would consider having it done is because i lost about 30 yards off my drive and my irons are coming up about 10 yars short, ie my golf game has $hit the bed. Question is how log till i can play again if i get it scoped? BTW doesn't realy hurt when i play, or later that day but the next days is a little rough.
