You see a new grad internship position or even a staff nurse position available. But NO! You can't send my resume directly to the nurse manager. You have to put in an application with HR. "Fill out an application online. It's good for 3 months. If we need you we'll call." ARRG!
Some secretary says, "Sure, you can fax HR a copy of your resume if you want." What's the point???.. I'm gonna fax it and will will make it's way right to the trash.
In one instance there was a new grad position that opened for 1 day. It closed the next morning. I saw it because I obsessively check the websites for jobs many times a day. About a week after I called to check the status. The secretary said, "Oh, they haven't review the application yet." That's ok! They are just taking their time. Meanwhile I called the nurse recruiter and left a message. Of course no returned call.
Well, almost 3-4 weeks of putting it in there, I called and told the secretary that I now have my license and if there was a way to amend my application. She actually checked and said " your application still wasnt accessed-- oh wait... the positions have already been filled a while back" WHAT? You mean they didn't even look at all the applicants??????
I have a somewhat impressive resume, I think. I believe that if I give my resume to a nurse manager, they would be interested. How am I supposed to get a job if they wont even look at it!!!????
Glad I got that out.

Wow. That's pretty discouraging.
I've been obsessively checking the boards myself and today I got quite a surprise. There were a lot more jobs for new grads. It may be a blip, or a light at the end of the tunnel. We shall see.
Good luck to you. My friends and family keep telling me the right job is out there for me. It's hard to believe them right now, but I'm sure they're right. The right job is out there for you, too. Just keep doing what you're doing.
Thanks so much! Best luck to you as well! I know things will work out, it's just very frustrating.

HR people never seem to function with the same level of urgency of the applicants, do they? Frustrating.
LOL! They already have a job!
Precisely!

Staylost, sometimes it makes a difference if you personally walk into HR (dressed to impress in your classic interview attire and armed with a bunch or resumes) and request to speak with a nurse recruiter without mentioning (yet) that you have previously applied for any position. Face time would give you a better chance at really selling yourself and at landing an interview.
You could also ask for a tour of the unit you're interested in, if the recruiter has a few minutes, and hopefully she will introduce you to the unit manager or you can at least find out the name of the nurse manager/director while on the unit (so you can call or email them later). You can also try calling the hospital's main line and asking the operator who the nurse manager is for whatever unit you're interested in or if you have the name already, just ask to be transferred to their line and leave a well-crafted message to sell yourself.
All the best in your search!

Call the department manager. Mention you applied on line but would be more than happy to hand deliver a her/him a hard copy.

AMEN! I cannot get a job to save my life and I honestly believe it becasue the NR are complete morons!
Thank you Hisown & HeartsOpenWide for the great advice! I have been applying for these positions from out of state and plan to show up in HR in person as soon as I get there on Monday!
I wasn't sure if it was ok to call the nurse manager myself, or hand-deliver a resume to the unit. I was there a few months ago and was thinking about just walking right into the ER and asking for the nurse manager. I thought that might be a bit brazing.
Question: In everyone's opinion, what should a man wear to meet with potential employers? button-up and slacks? Tie? suit? Tux? heh.

What I find annoying is when you get an e-mail saying the position you applied for was filled by another candidate but it is still on line!

I completely agree, i too find that so annoying and frustrating. The next thing that i find annoying is that some hospitals have a bunch of positions available and it's like seriously, are they trying to say that we qualify for none of the positions that they have open. U know what i mean.... very frustrating .
