My mother was sick in the hopsital for a week.
When she got better, i asked her how did the nurses act towards her; if they seemed stressed out, frustrated or burnt out from their job.
She said that all the RNs seemed fine. They were smiling and didn't seem like they hated their job. They were very busy but it didn't affect their attitudes, they were pleasant at least to her. She even said that her RN gave her a hug before she left.
From reading allnurses.com, the posts had me thinking that most RNs hated their jobs, and that they were always running around with a scowl on their face from being overworked and underpaid. It made me question whether I wanted to be a nurse from all the complaining on here.
If I vent my frustrations at work while in a patient's room, my employment is probably going to be terminated. If I tell my nurse managers, corporate folks, and administration about the nasty opinions I have of them to their faces, they'll be escorting me out to the parking lot in a New York minute and I'll have no job. The economy is not looking too hot at the present time, so I certainly need my job.
It is safer for me to complain and blow off steam while on this website.
However, I try to put on the face of professionalism while I am at work, because negative complaining tends to crush the morale of coworkers, patients, visitors, and other pertinent people. The truth sometimes hurts, so I reserve the truth for Allnurses.com
Op I used to feel the same as you, but then I quickly realized that I was destined to be a nurse and that no negative post or comment was going to change my mind. As a new grad nurse I can truly say that not all nurses hate their job. I have days where I question why I chose nursing and then I have days where I feel like I did choose the right career. Even though I vent, become frustated, and at times feel like giving up I can honestly say that I love what I do and the joy I bring to my residents. I also smile at work and then come home and vent. Sometimes venting is the only way a nurse can stay sane.and ofcourse I pray qday.
Nursing is one of the top stressful jobs you can get. We are responsible for the wellbeing of people who just can't take care of themselves for a while. After a while the stress can build up until you want to go nuclear. Coming in here to scream is good. Every professional in here knows we can't do it to the public or any other venue except one with the same jobs.
A lot of folks who are just reading our threads can sometime think we are just a bunch of nasty wicked no-feeling monsters.
I mean how would you feel if we said to you the things we say in here. You would just freak. I know I would. I loved nusing and hated to retire. but afterr 35 yrs the body gave up the ghost. And you will find the majority of the nurses in here the job as well.
Allnurses is where we come to vent. That's why a lot of the postings you read can be so negative. I think for the most part nursing is a very satisfying job, but like all jobs, can be very difficult and frustrating at times. Most people are still going to try to act very professional at work even the days that totally suck. That's why it's so important to be able to come here and vent later. You should base your decision to become a nurse on what you want to do. Don't base it on a bunch of negative comments on a website.

Not me, not in a million years. I already have to put up with them all day. Luckily, I LIKE my docs, but I still don't want to take them home.
On the topic of the thread, you couldn't pay me enough to go back to floor nursing now, at least not around here.
